Padme hadn't gone far off the path anytime recently. That sounded a bit ridiculous, but she'd been spending her time with her daughter and fiance, with researching and planning for the upcoming elections; this was the first time she'd gotten to be by herself in a while. She carefully maneuvered between the trees, getting an odd sort of peace from ( Read more... )

Evey was walking the quieter parts of the island, practicing the song she'd chosen for the auditions the next day. She wasn't really a singer or dancer, but she was more likely to get a part if she auditioned for everything that she could. Choosing a song had been difficult, but she'd finally settled on one that was easy to remember and easy to sing, as well as having a range of notes.

"Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings, these are a few--," she stopped suddenly when she entered a clearing and saw Padme kneeling and crying.

"Padme! What's wrong?" she asked in alarm.

"This- This used to be home?" Her voice was strained, and she twisted to look at Evey, her face reddened from crying. "Anakin- Anakin built it."

Even saying his name hurt. Why did there have to be reminders?

"Oh, I'm so sorry," she replied softly, moving next to Padme and putting a hand on her shoulder lightly. There wasn't really anything else she could do, after all.

Anakin was Padme's husband, she remembered. He'd disappeared well over a year ago now, when Padme had been pregnant with Sola.

She sucked in a breath. "I- I just- I'd forgotten. How did I forget?"

She didn't even know- She'd loved him with every part of her, and he'd hurt her- and left, and-

She had Jay. God, how could she cry here if she had Jay?

Since it would be a little creepy to follow Padme around when she finally got a chance to be by herself, when Jay headed out he made sure to go the other way. He'd just happened to forget the island didn't work like that.

His ears perked up in alarm at the sound of weeping, and he jogged over from where he was wandering along; his stomach dropped when he saw who it was.

"Padme, honey," he said, kneeling next to her. "What's wrong?"

"This is what's left-" She hiccuped, turning towards him to hug him as tightly as she could. "Jay, this is all-" All that was left of him. Even though she wouldn't change the way things were for anything, it still hurt.

Ah, the ever-present desire to rip Anakin Skywalker limb from goddamn limb. Jay had missed that, in the few months it had faded away. He sincerely hoped the guy didn't show up, because he wouldn't be able to resist that feeling. And if he got into it, so would Paige, and they'd probably end up killing him.

Boo-fuckin'-hoo.

"It's okay, sugar," he whispered, wrapping his arms around her tight and rocking her. "It's okay."

She was clinging to him. "I didn't- I didn't even think-" She sucked in a breath, then another, tears sliding down her cheeks. "How could I have not even looked?"

Because she'd been preoccupied with being pregnant and with Jay.

"I should have- It's so overgrown, Jay-"
