It didn't really feel right to rip into an angry song with Sola on the blanket next to him, just like it didn't feel right to wail mournfully about drinking away the memory of some woman in a bar. Especially not when she babbled right along with his guitar. Jesus, if her next few words came from one of those songs, Padme might kill him

"You know," the Doctor said thoughtfully, curbing Atalanta from sniffing too hard at the blanket, "I've heard that song sung to that same girl more than once. I think you might need to get a new one."

"The devil speaks the only common language," the Doctor said, "and it doesn't really have words." He scrunched his nose up more, and Sola giggled. "And yeah...if I had a child, I'd worry more than I do."

"Do you rule out havin' another one?" asked Jay frankly. He figured it had to have been something the two of them, him and Chase, had already talked about.

"Nah, haven't ruled it out," the Doctor said, looking a little embarrassed. "Just, you know...want to wait a few years." That, and to figure out any kind of genetic technology would take ages, even if he got access to Serenity's equipment (depending on how much sway Chase actually had with Mal Reynolds).

Probably more sway than was worth thinking about. Jay knew he certainly didn't like to think about it, anyway.

He just laughed softly, and clapped the Doctor on the back. "Good plan. I think we're waiting for a while too."

"Well," the Doctor said, slightly nasally because Sola really had a good grip on his nose by now, "I think you have enough to deal with here." He gently peeled her fingers off his nose and bounced her a bit, letting her gum a bit on the (clean) side of his hand. "And Rob and I...well, you never know. Sometime, definitely. After we get some time for ourselves, y'know?"

"That's a good idea. I mean... lookit this one." Jay grinned, and rescued the Doctor's face by taking Sola back. "She's going to be a handful." But that was said in a way that suggested he'd have her no other way.

"If I had a child," the Doctor said, "I really doubt I'd have much hair or nose left, really." It was true, after all, look at Sola's reaction and she wasn't even related.
