Callahan normally did not spend much time in the rec room, doing most of his reading at the church and generally finding the place rather crowded. However, today as he walked past the room with a cup of tea, something stopped him - something he heard. A snatch of dialogue, a familiar phrase ( Read more... )

What was it with people and vampires? Sam really was starting to wonder if his was the only world in which they had gone extinct, if only for a purported amount of time. He watched analytically, arching an eyebrow. "Holy water probably would have worked better," he advised.

"I thought my faith would be enough," Callahan murmured, shaking his head. He looked up at the newcomer. "Besides, it wouldn't have mattered. Holy water and crucifixes... just water and jewelry unless you have the faith to sustain them."

Sam has faith enough to still believe in angels, still pray every night, in the face of everything he's seen. Some nights, he figured that his faith was sort of all that kept him going sometimes. "So, I'm guessing you were supposed to have the faith?"

"Priest?" he guessed. "Or just evangelical?"

A little less dazed now, Callahan straightened up and cleared his throat. "Priest," he said. "Though after that - " He jerked his thumb at the projector. "It was a long time before I felt comfortable wearing that title again. But it's all right now."

Belize wasn't going to stop into the rec room today. He promised himself that he wouldn't go look at the bookshelf or monopolize the food that someone might have cooked. However, as he began to walk by, he heard a familiar voice. Immediately, Belize could tell that Father Callahan was struggling; what sort of trouble he was facing, Belize couldn't tell.

"Pere?" He asked, approaching cautiously. Belize watched as Pere staggered backwards towards the couch.

Callahan managed to catch himself before actually falling backwards, but when Belize approached, he reached out and put his hand on the young man's arm as if to steady himself. He took a deep breath. "Thank you. I needed a moment of grounding in the here and now."

"What's the matter? I was- am a nurse" Belize said with hurried concern as he placed his hands on top of Pere's to reinforce his balance.

"Just remember to breath if you can. If you can stand up I can go check the cabinets for any medicine we may have here..."

Callahan shook his head. "No, no, I'm fine. Something gave me a fright, that's all." He actually managed a small smile. "Good thing I'm pretty spry for an old fella else you might have a heart attack on your hands."

"Motherfuckin' vamps," Faith said bitterly, strutting into the room. She vaulted the back of the sofa and bounced on the cushions as she settled in. "Hey! I've seen this one! This is a wicked awesome movie. Stephen King's the shit, man," she continued, only then looking back at the priest. "Hey...you okay, padre?"

Callahan managed to catch himself before actually falling backwards onto the girl, resting a hand on the arm of the couch to steady himself. "I've been better," he admitted.

"Well, you can chill. Ain't no vamps here," she said, with a touch of disappointment. "Take a load off. Too bad there's no popcorn."

Callahan cleared his throat a little and then finally did settle onto the couch. "I suppose I could watch the end. I only know what happens to the priest."
