Even the birdies and beasties are sleepin'

There was a rocking chair in the rec-room and Eostre sat in it with both of the twins settled in her arms. She'd come up to the compound meaning to help Ruth with preparing dinner but Mack had been grumbly and Flora had been whiny, so Eostre had sat down in the chair for a moment, picked up both of her babies and set them all a rocking ( Read more... )

Mrs. Bennet had come to the compound to get something to eat, and she ought to take something home for Jane, but she was drawn into the recreational room by a sweet voice, singing. Mrs. Bennet always admired any one who attempted to sing, for she herself had never been very good at it.

Her delight at seeing the fair lady with her babies was unmatched, for her mind was naturally occupied with the thought of babies these days. She clapped her hands together and smiled brightly. "Ooh, they are quite small, and two at once, twins! How charming!"

Eostre looked up, her song at an end, and smiled.

"A month old, and, believe me, I know there's two of them. I carried them around for long enough, didn't I, girls?"

"Oh, forgive me for not introducing myself!" she exclaimed. "I am Mrs. Fanny Bennet. Perhaps you know my daughter, Mrs. Redman. She is expecting a new arrival very soon." Mrs. Bennet beamed with pride, knowing that she would have a granddaughter any day. "Perhaps when they are older, your girls will be friends with Jane's child. I do have great hopes, and your girls are very pretty."

"Oh!" said Eostre, and, though, with two babies in her arms, she couldn't very well straighten up, she smiled brightly. "I know Jane very well, Mrs Bennet. It's a pleasure to meet you."

She looked down.

"I'm Eostre, and this is Macha, and this is Flora."

She indicated which twin was witch was a nod of her head.

Raistlin was spending most of his time in the Rec Room. The bookshelf kept giving him books that were at once frustrating, but also very entrancing. The medical journal had been most informative even if at points hard to understand.

It was hard not to notice the woman rocking the babies, but he focused on the bookshelf. It gave him another history of Rome. He shrugged finally glancing to the others in the room. He glanced at the children. "Twins?" He maybe let more show as he said the word then he meant to, but perhaps this was because it was easy to think about his own mother and how things might have been.

(OOC: will be running to class soonish, but twins! had to tag.)

Eostre looked up at the young man at the bookshelf and shifted the babies in her arms.

"Twins," she confirmed, shifting the babies in her arms. "Two of them."

He smiled. "Yes, that's usually how it happens. How old are they?" He held his book to the side not really caring about the title. He was mostly concentrating on refusing to miss a certain great dolt that didn't happen to be here.

"Isn't it, just?" Eostre smiled. "They're about a month old. A little over. This is Macha, and this is Flora. Mack and Flo."

She indicated which twin was which by dropping kisses onto the tops of their heads.

"Thought the whole idea was to calm 'em down," I say with a playful wince, flopping over onto the sofa nearby, Max hopping right up and curling against my side.

Coming into the compound feels like making the fucking rounds. There's always somebody to stop and talk to. Was a time that would've annoyed the hell out of me, and a time I wouldn't have stopped, but now it just seems normal. Ex-god in the rec room of the magic fucking island, singing to her twins that I'm apparently Uncle Neil to. Normal.

Well, almost.

"Are you making fun of my singing, Neil Echolls-McCormick?" said Eostre, sharply, with a smile lifting the corner of her mouth.

She kept the chair rocking with one bare foot, flexing her toes against the floor.

"Who, me?" I ask, tipping my head over and flashing her a lazy grin.

"Yes, you, you horrible child," said Eostre, shaking her head.

The sight of Eostre with the girls was just one of those things that fell in the category of "warm fuzzy," no matter how many time she saw it. This time, Abby was in the rec room to try to get another lab notebook from the bookshelf.

She could actually carry a tune, in a bucket or otherwise, and the song wasn't that hard, so once she'd listened to it one time through, she joined in, singing in a low alto that matched her speaking voice.

"Angus is here wi' dreams to sell, Hush ye my babies and sleep without fear," she sang, modifying the song to fit the twins.

Eostre burst into a broad smile and she tilted back in the rocking chair to look up at Abby.

"You sound better than I do."

"I was in children's choir. Shh, don't tell," she whispered. "It'll ruin my tough tattooed image."

"I won't tell a soul," said Eostre, with a slight nod of her head. "Promise."

For a moment he just stands leaning against the doorframe, watching, listening. Two years ago if you'd told him that this is what he would have someday he would have laughed in your face.

He's not sure what he'd do if someone told him that he'd have it forever. He remembers the fight with Chris on the beach. He's got the necklace wrapped around his wrist.

He thinks maybe if he lost this tomorrow, it would be worth seeing it now.

Eostre looks up, the song dying on her lips but the jukebox still going, and, for a moment, she just stares at him, a little, soft smile on her face.

"You come for lullaby, Daddy?"

She never, ever lost the flutter in the pit of her stomach when she saw him. It never went away.

"Don't need one. 'M asleep half the time anyway." He smiles slightly and moves forward, still limping very faintly, over to the chair. He reaches down and curves his palm over Flo's head.

"She's always so warm," he murmurs.

Eostre looked up at him.

"She is, isn't she? She's a regular little furnace." She grinned. "Just like her dad."
