Outspan's in the kitchen, making tea, mostly because it seems like the thing to do. It's strange - whenever he walks in, despite the fact that he's been on the Island for months now, he always expects to see Maureen making dinner, or Gráinne singing loudly along to the radio, or his Ma standing at the sink, up to her elbows in soapy water and ( Read more... )

"Water's boiling." Eden steps away from the doorway, wandering further into the kitchen to come to rest against the counter. "Got enough in that pot for one more?"

Outspan snaps out of his daze to see Eden, and a genuine smile spreads across his face. "Ah, t'anks, Eden," he says, and switches off the heat. "I was miles away." He takes two mugs down and fills them both, and then hands one to Eden. "I always make enough for more than meself. Habit, like."

Eden smiles as she accepts the mug, letting it warm already warm hands before setting it down as she starts a search for sugar. "Where were you?" she asks, genuinely curious. She's always wandering away herself. It's almost comforting to see someone else afflicted with the same.

"Ehm... home, I suppose. T'inking about me family." He feels a little strange, talking about it, but he's glad she asked. It helps to talk.

"Thou shouldst attend to that," Viola advises without so much as a glance spared in the stranger's direction, distracted as she be by the book spread open before her on the table. In nearly ten months' time upon this most vexing of isles, she hath learnt enough o' the kitchen to know how and how not a kettle should be used, and sure if it doth shriek and carry on so, 'tis crying out 'gainst unwonted abuse.

"Ah, sorry. Hope I didn't disturb your readin'," he says, turning quickly to silence the kettle. "Would y'like any?"

This time, Viola does lift her eyes from the text, realizing only now her own unwarranted ill disposition.

"Oh," says she, surprised and perchance even a little shame-faced. "That were a gen'rous offer, though I am not fit for 't; I did speak thee rudely."

Outspan tries not to show on his face the surprise and even mild confusion about the odd way of speaking. Sounded almost like that guy whose plays Damien was always reading.

"Nah, 's'okay," he says, waving a hand in the air. "Name's Outspan, by the way." He extends his hand.

One of Cecily's favorite places had to be the kitchen. She always seemed to find some sort of comfort there, whether it be a new friendly face, or a banana. She had hardly set foot in the kitchen at Woolton, her old home. But this time as Cecily wandered into the kitchen she was much surprised by what she saw, or who for that matter.

"I know you!" She exclaimed, although Cecily tended to be forgetful and couldn't recall his name. But he had saved her from the tree on the day she arrived. It seemed so long ago...

Outspan looks up in alarm, but then smiles when he sees that girl, the one who was in the tree. "Yeah! Cecily, righ'? Would y'like some tea?" He turns off the heat under the kettle so that the screeching quiets and dies.

Cecily nodded and thought on a moment for the man's name. Silly thing, memory was, for Cecily was sure she had a good one, and yet the name escaped her...

"Yes I would love some tea... and your name. I seem to have forgotten it!"

Outspan pours her a mug, and turns to hand it to her. "Outspan," he reminds Cecily, smiling to show he doesn't mind that she's forgotten. "So how're you likin' it 'round here?"
