Remember, remember...a bit too well, perhaps

Evey hated days like today.  They'd start out normal and fine, with a sunny day and nothing much going on, and then they'd unexpectedly crash into fiery bits.

Usually the crashing into bits part involved some wild animal feasting on her roses and Rollo shaking salty fishy muddy water all over her and then the clothesbox giving her only dirty ( Read more... )

"Woah!" exclaimed Gunn when something, although he assumed it was someone, exploded through the underbrush, across the path and into the trees on the other side. Expecting someone else to follow, he stood still for a moment, but no one came. He walked forward and crouched down. His eyes eventually fell on a young woman.

"Uh, whoever you were runnin' from?" he said. "Pretty sure you lost 'em."

"I guess so," said Gunn, although there was no conviction in his words. "I mean, home wasn't great or anythin' but it's the only thing I know. "

He shrugged.

"Not anymore," she pointed out quietly, with the flicker of a smile. "I truly am sorry for startling you. I wasn't really thinking about where I was going...other than away, of course."

"Don't worry 'bout it," he said, now smiling. "Most excitin' thing to happen to me all week."

Evey chuckled. "You're right. This place can be a bit monotonous. Other than the clothesbox, and even it is almost predictable in its total lack of helpfulness."

He gestured to the shirt he was wearing that proclaimed him a Buddhist Hunk in response. "I'm gettin' the whole 'lack of helpfulness' thing loud and clear."

Evey chuckled. She thought he might be a Buddhist Hunk, actually, although the Buddhist part might be incorrect. He certainly was fit, though.

"It recently presented me with a shirt stating that I was a decoy. I'm not sure what I was a decoy for, though."

Gunn laughed and shrugged. "Sometimes I think it just looks up random words in the dictionary or somethin' and slaps it on a t-shirt."

"I wouldn't be surprised. I'm sure the bookshelf does that. No one could have actually written some of the books it appears to contain. Or I suppose they could have written them, but I doubt any publisher would be interested," she amended her statement.

"You mean So Your Former Boss Started Wearing Leather Pants? isn't on the best seller's list?" he said, his words dripping with sarcasm although his smile remained genuine.

"I rather doubt it...although my former boss likely would have worn leather pants," she admitted. Patricia would have worn them in the American, trousers sense and Gordon might well have worn them in the British undergarment sense.

That was a mental image she didn't need.

"Was he evil?" he asked. Because clearly leather pants were akin to declaring yourself evil.

Evey blinked. "One of them could be rather evil at times. The other was just incredibly flamingly gay. Well, he was flamingly gay once I realized he was and looked at his actions through that. Before that I just thought he was your average television personality."

"My boss only went evil when he pulled out the leather pants," he said by way of explanation. "He was a freak like that."

"Well, at least you always knew when he was evil then," she pointed out with a tinge of humor. "It would be convenient to be able to notice the pants and then know he was evil so you could take whatever steps required."

He laughed as that's pretty much what they'd done. Cordelia had been particularly adept at Leather Pant Watch. "So your boss was on the fence of evil then? Or did just get cranky?"
