I find that I have been ever in a mood as of late. I sleep poorly, I eat poorly, I train poorly. I imagine that it all traces to our weekend at home, which should have been restful and peaceful, but instead seems to have instigated all types of chaos where there was none prior ( Read more... )

Without fail, Helen Hoover Boyle found herself meeting new people every time she exited the Compound.

Last time a man religiously kneeling at the wall, this time a very, very intimidating man with knives. Greeat..... Helen thought to herself as she tried to step quietly around, not wanting to make a scene.

As she stepped however, the back of her shoe brushed against one of the knives sitting just to the side of the man.

"Sorry." Helen said with more honesty in her voice than ever before on the island. This was someone she hadn't wanted to upset.

I turn my dagger over in my hand, ensuring that it is clean, when something bumps against my second dagger. I tense and roll off the step into a crouch, one dagger brandished in front of me, the second hand already reaching for my sword. My heart races, and then I look up, and there is a woman, just a woman and not an enemy, standing where I had sat.

Immediately I relax, dropping my dagger back into its sheath and dropping my head down. "Apologies, m'lady," I say, inwardly berating my complete paranoia these days. "I fear you startled me."

Envisioning a sharp knife severing a limb or her head, Helen's eyes remained locked on the blades.

"No." She said quietly, still very aware of the weapons. "I apologize. I bumped into one of your knives." Helen saw that he had meant no harm and was caught off guard that he appeared to be so polite.

"Didn't mean to frighten you, just on my way out." Helen Hoover Boyle laughed. Not a hearty laugh that could be heard during a funny movie, but a quick laugh that is forced out by used car salesmen when trying to disguise a defect.

"Knives are quite large." She said awkwardly, trying to reduce the tension. "Ever had to use them?"

I retrieve my second dagger from its place on the step before the woman, sheathing it as well, as I stand up, hands open at my sides. "Perhaps I should learn the lesson now that it is not wise to clean weapons on the compound doorstep," I muse.

"I have used them, yes, m'lady," I admit. "Many times, though for naught but practice since I arrived here."

Time has done nothing to ease the star's temper at the latest misfortune that has befallen her. She wasn't really ready to accept and take comfort in the fact that her flesh was really flesh and her bones were really bones and there was no going back, positives aside.

The star had all but resigned that humanity was a load of nonsense, especially when viewed upclose. At least for the moment. Still, the pale girl can't help but find herself outside again, dressed in strange clothes, a dress of green, topaz about her neck this time since she can't bear to part with it and wouldn't dare to try, and watched a man was nearly as fair as she was sharpen a blade.

"Is that really useful here? Are there witches and such?" Yvaine asked, genuinely interested for once.

I am knocked out of my seeming trance by the sound of a young woman's voice, and I look up to see who is speaking to me. Carefully, I cross my daggers in my lap and nod to her.

"I have hopes that they shall never be useful here, m'lady, but I find I would rather be overprepared than not. Any witches here have lost their powers, but it is not witches I fear."

Yvaine considered this, lips pressed together as her nose twitched for a moment, before she relaxed. "I suppose that'd be correct, but they'd be dangerous. Humbled or not, they'd still strive for power they can't have."

Without meaning to think about it, the star touched the place where her own heart was, where it burned, and now beat, a strange set of circumstances on its own. "Then what do you fear?"

"This is true, quite true," I say, and I think of Melisande, who has no powers but is fearful nonetheless, and the Mahrkagir, who would still strive for darkness even without the gods who listened to him.

"I--" I do not know how to answer her question. I do not wish others to think me mad, seeing danger when there is nothing. But what if the danger is real, is true? Then I shall be the fool for not acknowledging it. "For all the friends I have where I came from, before here, I have just as many who would like to test their steel against mine," I say finally.

Stu came out after his cup of coffee and a bit of being around folks, then stopped behind the fellow busy with his knives. He stood in the sunshine for a secind, then set himself on the step, near but not close and nodded at him.

As I glance up, I notice a man standing behind me. At least he has taken care not to startle me; a good choice given my weaponry, I suppose.

"Well met, sir," I say, nodding my head at him as I turn my dagger in my hand, wiping the blade clean.

"Mornin'," he drawled, nodding slowly at the fella. Seemed he was busy with his business, so Stu kept quiet, lookin' over the knife for a second, then turning his attention to the few folks walkin' around the area.

[lol, like I could pass this up?]

Blade cleaned, I inspect it once more before sheathing it. I pick up my second dagger, spinning it effortlessly into my hand, before taking cloth to blade again, wiping it down. I note a chip in the blade, and think that perhaps I should see Kate about fixing that.
