It had been a very trying few days in this place. Marian had slept for much of it, her body needing the rest both to remove the rest of the hemlock, and to help heal her wound

Veronica was passing through the clinic on her way to the IPD office, actually, with the intent of kidnapping Sam from his duties if he was around. The woman she saw on her way through was interesting, though - new, really, which was almost the same thing in her book. It wasn't that Veronica was so much good with new people as it was that she couldn't help herself. Besides, being on the council had drummed up enough of a sense of civic duty to last her a lifetime. "Who've you got for a doctor?" she asked, grinning a little. "Wilson, House, Grey, Chase? 'cause if it's Chase, give him a hard time for me."
It was rare for Veronica to be really startled, but that did the trick. Her eyes widened a little, brow furrowing. "Wait, no one's explained all this to you?" Alright, so maybe Chase had been busy saving Marian's life or whatever. She wasn't entirely sure she could give him a pass on that anyway.
Resting her hands on the side of a bed, Veronica sighed and nodded. "This place doesn't really have a year, Marian. It's... magic," she settled on finally, still feeling stupid for using the word. "People show up here without meaning to, without knowing how, and we don't know how to get off. And these people that show up come from all over. All over time, all over space - different countries, worlds, years. I showed up from 2006." You're not in Kansas anymore.
"Doctor Chase did say this was an island, and that people were spirited here through unknown means, but..." Marian looked shocked and unsure, as if the ladder she had been perched upon, wobbling already, now took a tumble, leaving her adrift. "Magic? Two thousand and six? No, it's impossible."
Yet, so much of this place was so strange, so odd. Marian looked away from Veronica for a moment before turning back, her tone even and her expression intent. "Is it truly so? Do not lie to me Veronica, or think I cannot handle it, as difficult as it may be. Things are truly as you say, this is not another sort of joke?"
Veronica had learned a long time ago that there were times when a lie was kinder than the truth. But lying about something like this was just stupid. Marian was injured, not fragile, and she'd have to buck up and deal with it eventually anyway. "Well, I'm not laughing," she said, shrugging. "It's... totally true." She hesitated. "Honestly, it sucks at first, but it gets a lot better." And now it was home.
Veronica looked at Marian for a long moment, something almost like guilt stirring inside her. "Yeah," she said finally. "A couple... old friends. And my father."
Veronica nodded with the sort of quick earnestness that meant she wasn't actually sure. "Yeah," she said, taking a deeper breath. "I mean, hey, mine didn't show up for almost a year, but he got here eventually."
"A year. You have been on this island for over a year?" It was like another punch to the gut. Somehow, even with this building this felt impermanent to her.
"Almost a year and a half." Veronica shook her head, brow raising. Back at the beginning, she'd thought she was going to get out so fast, leave nothing but dust. She'd been going to find a way to get home that everyone else had missed. It passed so much faster than she'd thought it would.
"I had not..." She shook her head and started over. "I do not know what I thought. Perhaps it does not yet seem real, but rather like a dream of some sort."
Weirdly enough, that kind of summed it up. "You'll get your feet pretty fast," Veronica agreed, waving a hand carelessly. Besides, she was Maid Marian. That counted for something, right? Maybe. "And the people are alright. And I mean, everything's free, so you never have to worry about being broke."
Veronica turned her head to the side, eyes widening a little, as if it should have been evident. "Free of charge, no cost, nada, zip. 'From each according to his ability to each according to his needs.' The health care's free, the food is, everything's volunteerism in action."
