what makes the water holy she says is that it's the closest thing to rain

When Charlie was fifteen, she used to cut school with her friends and they'd go to the lake, swim in their underwear, drink stolen beers. She'd left school at sixteen, started working all the time at the diner but she'd remembered, when the weather was sticky and close...the days that she hadn't gone to school ( Read more... )

Walking between the small houses, her shoes abandoned a while ago in favor of the fine sand on the beach and the soft grass in the jungle, Jo wasn't paying much attention to where she was going. Just walking. In the sun, it was peaceful, away from the Compound and most of the people. She wasn't really one for reflection - too many negative thoughts came up, bad memories - but she could be alone and not think at all and she enjoyed that.

As she came upon the waterfall, she was so busy not thinking, she didn't even notice the girl standing under the stream. Jo just sat down, rolled up her jeans and dangled her feet in the cool water, watching the surface ripple.

Charlie saw the girl come up, but, for a minute, she didn't move. The water felt too good pouring over her shoulders.

Eventually, though, she ducked under the water, coming up a few feet into the pool, her red hair slicked back from her face.

"Heya..."

At the voice, Jo jumped slightly, her leg making a small splash in the pool. She was seriously going to have to take some time off before hunting again when she went home... if she went home. Her reflexes were seriously lacking.

"Hi," she said brightly, raising her hand in a sheepish half-wave. "Sorry, am I disturbing you?"

"It's a free island, honey," sad Charlie, swimming slowly towards her. "I was just taking a swim. It's so hot."

She squeezed the water out of her hair.

Ianto had been on a run, just trying to get some nervous energy out. After jogging along the beach, he'd turned inland, using one of the main paths that cut through the island. It was then that he saw Charlie, or rather what Charlie would look like if she were a drowned rat. He slowed and walked along the edge of the small lake, grinning at Charlie as he tried to catch his breath. He didn't bother saying anything, since he knew she couldn't hear him, but just smiled.

Charlie stood under the waterfall with her head tipped back, the force of it on her face and her arms still stretched out.

It just felt so nice, on her face and chest, and she was laughing so hard she was almost breathless.

Chuckling softly himself, Ianto paused at the edge of the water, just watching for a moment longer. Then he unlaced his shoes, abandoning them, his socks and his shirt by a rock, and dove into the water to join Charlie.

Charlie squeaked, unaware that Ianto was there until he dived in the pool.

"Momma!"

Hiro didn't really mean to sneak up unnoticed - he had come across her and she looked so peaceful he didn't want to interrupt. He stood and watched her for a long moment, just smiling, before finally moving forward to reveal himself.

"Is the water nice?" he called out, to get her attention.

"Come in," said Charlie, swimming out of the full flow of the water, towards him. "It's beautiful, baby. I promise."

"Okay," he said, after a long moment of thinking about it. "I be in in second."

He was not in an outfit for swimming, but he didn't really feel like going back. He slipped out of his sandals and pulled off his shirt and put it and his sword aside, wading into the water slowly in just his shorts. They'd dry eventually, especially with the heat of the day.

He shivered a little once he was fully in and waiting for her to swim over, the water colder than he imagined it'd be, but found it to be really sort of nice.

Charlie swam over, long praticed strokes, and wrapped her arms around Hiro's neck, anchoring herself to him while her feet floated, her skin chill from being in the water.

"Hey," she said, smiling, and kissed him. "How ya doin'?"
