Jeroen hadn't been hiding, precisely. He hadn't even been anti-social. He'd been having adventures, and helping (read: annoying) Eostre and the twins, and being entirely normal ( Read more... )

Hobbes was out in the surf with Dexter, throwing a piece of drift wood out into the waves and watching him tear off after it over and over again. Introspection was catching. It had been a long weekend.

"Hey, kid," he called, walking up out of the surf, whipping driftwood back into the waves. "How's it goin'?"

Hobbes ran his fingers over the tags in his hand, thinking. Remembering. 'Your friend?' And the pained look on Jeroen's face when he said, 'My soldier'.

"Oh," he murmured, looking over at him. "Oh, god, Jeroen." He's silent for a moment, not disgusted or angry. Just quietly shocked. "Did he...did Walt...make you?"

Jeroen shook his head, not looking at Hobbes. Walt hadn't made him do anything. Not really.

"Yeah?" Hobbes said quietly, gently, even as his fingers curled tight around the dogtags until they were digging into his hand. "You're sure?"

Jeroen shrugged slightly, looking down at the sand. It wasn't making him. He thought.

Hobbes stared at his huddled form for a minute before sighing quietly, feeling his stomach knot up. He reached out, dragging Jeroen tight against his side, pressing a brotherly kiss to the crown of his head.

"I'm sorry, Jeroen," he said. If that man had been in his unit he wouldn't have even made it to the court martial tribunal. "It shouldn't have happened. You're - christ, you're a kid."

Jeroen had relaxed slightly at the kiss, but he stiffened again. "Not kid," he mumbled. He wasn't.

"You are twelve years old," Hobbes muttered. "You should be...I don't know. Playing arcade games and tee-ball. God, that kind of shit is confusing enough as a twenty-nine year old. Christ." He jostled Jeroen lightly. "You deserved better, kid."

Jeroen looked at Hobbes, a little confused by his references. "Not kid," he said again, but quietly.

"No," Hobbes muttered, after a short pause. "No, you're not."

He made himself grin, though. "Hey, but, Peter, huh? That's good. You can look out for him."

"Ja," Jeroen said, with a little smile, before ducking his head back down.

"Ja," Hobbes echoed, grinning faintly and tousling his hair. "'m glad for ya kid. You happy here?"

Jeroen shrugged. He was, sometimes, but there were other times, like now, when he missed home so badly it burned.

Hobbes grinned at him, rubbing his back. "Homesick?"
