surprising and uncanny

Rogue had the script for Much Ado About Nothing in her hand as she strode brusquely down the beach. It was not her copy. It was, in fact, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce's copy, and she would not give it back to him.

"Because," she continued, "you're startin' to talk funny! Funnier'n usual. You need a break, English." She smiled brightly at him over her ( Read more... )

He'd stopped because he'd seen the dolphins, but he'd been out there because the construction at home was giving him a headache. Also? Home. It was still weird to think about it. He had been swimming in the water when he'd seen them in the waves and wandered to shore, toweling off as he gaped at the dolphins while a distressing thought came to mind.

I swear, I hope the Doctor doesn't speak dolphin.

Chase rolled his eyes and continued to tread water, stroking his fingers up and down the body of the swimming dolphin. "Yeah, but I'm cuter."

"Than what?" the Doctor asked, patting the dolphin on the side. "The Sydney Opera House? I'd say so."

"Than you," Chase teased, easing off to swim back to the Doctor and take a deep breath before heading for deeper waters.

The Doctor merely watched him, the dolphin nudging him in the leg as if to indicate he should follow him. He turned and looked at her. "No, see, then he'd win," he said.

Chase didn't surface for seventy-two seconds, exactly. He'd been keeping track and when he came up, he was five-hundred feet from the Doctor and the dolphins. "Are you starting a dolphin commune?" he shouted. "Don't do that!"

Ninety seconds was when the Doctor would have gone after him. He looked nonchalantly back at Chase. "Why, afraid she'll replace you in my affections?" he teased. "She doesn't even swing that way, and neither do I!"

Chase slowly began to sidestroke back, giving the Doctor a very, very worried look. "I am so terrified of what our life will be like," he said, eyes wide.

"What?" the Doctor said, patting the dolphin (she had a name but he couldn't pronounce it and he thought he'd misheard), then swimming to meet Chase. "You know you love it."

Chase just swam the remainder of the distance, treading water and going with the lull of the large waves. "You communicate with wolves and dogs and dolphins," Chase pointed out, fingers dancing atop the surface of the water. "And ... apparently, the dolphins are gay."

"The dog got her own bed downstairs by K-9," the Doctor pointed out. "Growing up and all that. And there is nothing wrong with talking to animals. They listen." He grinned. "And that's surprising?"

"I liked her with us," he protested lightly, letting the salt content of the water keep him afloat. "And yes, it's surprising. The water is rumoured to make people gay. Not dolphins."

"I already fancied blokes," the Doctor pointed out, treading water slowly. "And she can come in and out, she just needs a bed and she'll just be getting bigger until she wags her tail into books and things."

"Our room is double the size as of tomorrow," Chase reminded the Doctor, coaxing the Doctor's legs around his waist, easily treading water while holding him.

"Sometimes I like having space for beings of greater sentience that don't smell funny when wet," the Doctor said, leaning one arm on Chase's shoulder.

He was slowly getting them back to shallow ground, swimming like a giant squid, kissing the Doctor's jaw. "So, I'm totally kicked out of bed, huh?"
