Stephen was in better spirits than the previous week, having made up with Jane, and now he was in the midst of planning a great scientific endeavor: namely, his long-delayed trip to dinosaur territory to investigate the beasts firsthand. After much thought, he had finally decided that the risks were worth the discoveries he might make, and in any ( Read more... )

Pintel opened the door to the Clinic. Ragetti's instructions on how to get here had been vague, and he still wasn't sure if this was the correct place. But he opened the door anyhow and walked in, peering about. He was rather annoyed, going to a Physician.. Pah! He was healthy as he'd been thirty years ago! But his friend had insisted on him going anyway.

"Er... 'Ello?"

Stephen glanced up and raised his eyebrows slightly, as the fellow in the doorway was nearly as decrepit as Mr. Ragetti, and was dressed in similar clothing. He hoped that this fellow would not be in the habit of following him about like a lost puppy.

"Good evening, sir; may I help you?" he inquired, setting down the pistol.

Pintel jumped a little, but grinned, rotten teeth showing. "Er, yeh. 'M Pintel. Er, Ragetti sent me 'ere. 'E said I should see th' doctor." He shrugged, grumbling something about not really needing to and that this was a silly idea.

"Is there anything amiss?" Stephen asked. The fellow looked half-starved and verminous, but not especially ill. "Are you injured or ailing?"

A matter of great importance weighed on Mrs. Bennet's mind as she made her way to the clinic. Jane had kindly advised her that Doctor Maturin was in this evening, so she walked in, ready to ask her question when the sight before her eyes startled her.

"Oh! Do be careful with that, sir!" The weapon frightened her, and her heart did flutter so.

"You have nothing to fear, madam; I have handled firearms since I was a boy, and in any case, it is not loaded." Stephen set down the pistol in any case, and added, "May I be of assistance? I do hope you are not ill."

She took a moment ot catch her breath. "Do forgive my alarm. My husband was hardly an avid sportsman. If only we had a son, I might be more accustomed to such things. Do you hunt birds?" She blinked several times and then recalled why she had come to see him.

"I am quite well, but my nerves, you know. I fear my smelling salts shall run out and what ever would I do without them to calm me? Pray where is the apothecary here?"

"By no means," Stephen said indignantly. "I am a naturalist; I would not shoot an animal for mere sport, though I did hunt as a lad." Dissecting was one thing; shooting was another matter entirely.

He listened to Mrs. Bennet's complaint with more sympathy. "Alas, there is no apothecary upon the island, nor smelling salts or laudanum, which I should normally prescribe for such an ailment. However, there is a capital soporific herb that grows here, which may be smoked like a cigar or in a pipe; Cannabis sativa is its scientific name, and it is most efficacious."
