The snow had gone, and Winry wasn't really sorry about that. Especially since it had left her an excellent present in return - a blowtorch just like the one she'd had back home, with fuel and everything. So she'd spent the last few days tinkering with it, but that tinkering was hampered by the fact that she didn't have very much metal with her. ( Read more... )

Despite his resolutions, Edward's resolved had always been something that needed to be tempered. After half a decade of moving from place to place, by train and car and foot, he'd developed something of a wanderlust. On this particular evening, he'd decided to go for a walk, in hopes of easing the creeping, crawling sensation in his legs -- yes, even the one that should not have been able to feel anything at all. It had been a bit of a comfort that Al had decided to accompany him this particularly balmy evening. Hands tucked into the pockets of his brightly-colored drawstring shorts, and feet clad in flip-flops, he walked at a leisurly pace, noticing the subtlties around them -- the gentle buzz of bugs wings, the way the sand and rock on the path crunched together under their feet, and even the way their footsteps had synched up ( ... )

"Mmn," Al agreed, looking vaguely distracted but also smiling before he focused his attention on his brother.

"It's pretty mild. Feels like-" he stopped suddenly, both walking and speaking and stared at a point up and far past Ed.

"....Brother," he said, very still.

Edward stopped, his eyebrows drawing together. "What's the matter?" he asked, turning to follow Al's gaze.

His brow relaxed, and golden eyes widened in surprise. There, a light, winking dimly in the dusk, suspended in the trees. Edward swallowed a lump in his throat.

"...you think...?" he trailed off as he began walking again, his pace quickened.

Winry switched off the light and began to step away from the window (which was just a hole in the wall with a curtain over it) when she saw the glint of light off automail. Did they see it? She set the light on the ledge again and switched it on and off, just once, feeling a little bit stupid and wondering if they'd notice.

Kate had become used to the artificial lights in the compound, but she had not ever seen one out among the trees.

She paused to watch it for a moment, wondering as to what it might be.

"Hello?" she called, to curious to ignore it.

Winry leaned a little way out of the window, looking down at the girl who'd called out. "Hi," Winry said, a little embarrassed. "I wasn't bothering you, was I?"

"Bothering? No. I only saw your light, and wondered how you did that. I've not ever seen such a thing before I came here, and then only in the building." She smiled up at the girl in the treehouse. "I'm the one bothering, aren't I? You seem to be already in your home, and I was only looking to a good place to make one of my own. Someplace without too many neighbors who might be bothered by my working."

"It's something from home," Winry said. "And no, you're not bothering me. I don't mind at all. Why don't you come on up? You can see the view really well from here, and maybe find a place to build your own."

Winry disappeared from the window, but then her head was visible hanging from underneath the treehouse, in the hole cut in the floor. "Climb on up!" She dropped the rope ladder and waved. "I'm Winry."
