River Tam was upset.
She had come to the compound only looking for breakfast, but instead she found a notice on the bulletin board that said the doctors were planning on taking medical histories from everybody. River had no intention of doing as they asked, ever. She wanted to rip the notice off the board, but there were a lot of people around. She didn't like to look crazy in public if she could help it, and she wasn't really that agitated about it, only worried and unhappy that people thought it was all right to pry into people like that. And folks wondered why she didn't trust doctors. (Except for Simon, who she missed deeply and terribly just then.)
Her puppy Simon, while not quite as comforting as her brother might have been, pawed at her leg and whined, and she was glad for his company. She'd promised him bacon, and bacon he would have. As she made her way to the kitchen, dog close behind her, she became aware of the charged atmosphere in the compound. People were Talking, because Something had Happened. Someone was dead. Someone River knew, a bit. And the word "torture" was tossed about, almost casually even though she could tell that people were horrified by it.
River was more than horrified. She knew what it was to be tortured, first hand though she tried so hard to forget. Her own memories, and remembered bits of Mal's and Wash's, and she could lose them sometimes, in the daylight. They came back in the night for her and for Mal, she knew, though they never spoke of it, and she would have guessed it was the same for Wash. She didn't like it when her nightmares intruded on her waking life. Resented it and feared it all at once.
No longer hungry herself, she sat on the floor in a quiet corner of the kitchen, absently feeding Simon bits of bacon. She thought that if she believed in making wishes she would like to make one to unlearn things that she knew, so they could not haunt her the way that they did.
[Girl and puppy, open to anyone. She could use the distraction, as could I. :)]
