It was Christmas Eve, babe...in the drunk tank, and an old man said to me, "won't see another one".

Christmas had always somewhat perplexed Eostre, if she was honest. She didn't understand. The trees were pretty. She'd always rather enjoyed the food, but it seemed to her that God got rather lost in it. The Christians had such a funny little ( Read more... )

Jeroen bounded into the rec-room a little excitedly. He'd been annoyed at first with the way the months seemed to have changed, but that was before he found out it was almost Christmas. He wasn't really hoping for much, but if the bookshelf seemed to think, as others said it did, he hoped it would be nice, as a Christmas present, and give him The Grinch Who Stole Christmas again.

He wouldn't have Crowley translating for him, but he thought he'd understand the story this time around.

Jeroen shrugged. He wasn't particularly interested in what would happen if he didn't rub his finger on his teeth.

Eostre sighed and levered herself up off the couch.

She stuck out her hand to Jeroen.

"Come on. This cannot stand, young man."

Jeroen took her hand reluctantly, standing. He'd been perfectly comfortable on the couch.

She tugged him with her, bringing the plate of biscuits to the bathroom with them. Rummaging in the cupboard, she found a new toothbrush and toothpaste, and showed them to him.

"So your teeth don't fall out."

Jeroen looked at the toothbrush sceptically, then up at her. "What?" he asked, a little confused, and mostly not liking where this would end up going.

She rolled her eyes.

"Fine."

She applied toothpaste to the toothbrush, ran it under the tap, and then started to brush her teeth.

Jeroen watched her, wary and fascinated. It didn't look like she was eating, and he couldn't understand why she'd be putting something in her mouth otherwise.

Eostre bent over the basin and spat, repeating the process again before running the toothbrush under the tap and rinsing before spitting again.

Jeroen's nose wrinkled. Whatever was in her mouth seemed to be disgusting that she needed to spit it out.

She grinned at him, baring her teeth.

"Maak schoon."

So the stuff in her mouth had been soap. He'd had soap in his mouth when he swore, once, and had never done it in front of his adoptive parents again. It was disgusting. "Okay," he said, still sceptical.

"It tastes okay," she said, putting toothpaste on the end of her finger and sucking it. "Munt."

Mint soap. Well, that was new, but he'd experienced many new things since he'd gotten here. He supposed this wouldn't be much different.

She loaded the toothbrush with paste and held it out to him.

"Try."

Jeroen looked at the toothbrush doubtfully for a long moment, before putting it in his mouth. Once he had done that, he brushed it back and forth experimentally.
