the world turned upside down

Polly had been out of the compound like a shot as soon as they'd been given the go-ahead. She'd seen Starks, she'd seen Mal, she'd seen Hilary even, but Duo, she had been forced to conclude, was not in there. She didn't know that there was any other really good cover out there, and she'd started to hear talk of people missingShe felt obscurely that ( Read more... )

Duo felt bad for leaving Serenity so quickly, and he'd promised he'd be back, but first thing's first.

He had to find Polly.

The landscape was so changed and the debris was so heavy, that it was difficult to find your way around. He wound up picking his way through the woods and ending up in what would have been a familiar clearing. As it was, the only thing that confirmed his suspicion that the hut he'd built for Polly had stood there was Polly herself.

She didn't look okay.

He picked his way quietly across the sand and downed branches to come up behind her, looking a little pained.

"Hey, c'mon. I'll build another one, like twice as quickly. With a door this time, promise..."

"DUO!" Polly choked back the inexplicable desire to slap him. "Never! Ever make me worry like that again- gods, Duo, where the hell WERE you?!"

Duo's eyes went wide. Oh, yeah, that made more sense.

"I got stuck! I got turned around in the storm and ended up at the Serenity, so they took me in." He was hovering already. If he'd had a tale it would have been tucked between his legs, and if he'd had ears, they would have been lying flat in his fervent desire to make amends. He didn't have these things, but he managed to convey the information anyway.

And, under those circumstances, you couldn't very well keep yelling at someone. Not that that meant she was suddenly not upset, but if it wasn't Duo's fault then it wasn't Duo's fault.

Unfortunately, that meant it had nowhere to go, which was almost as disorienting as whatever that stuff Lyanna had talked her into drinking had been, and somehow worse since you couldn't blame it on anyone's evil wiles. "I've been looking for you all over, there's- people are missing, you know that? Even ones that we know got into the caves all right."
