Summary: Albus winds Scorpius up over having a crush on him. Scorpius loves Albus, but rather than tell him he punches him. Oh boys...
Scorpius sat staring out at the lake, having grown cold some time ago. However, he somehow couldn’t bring himself to go back inside the castle, so he continued staring over the dark water with a slightly furrowed brow and tired eyes.
He pondered pulling his robes further round him, but he’d sat here so long he couldn’t seem to move anymore. He could barely think, and when he did he had but one thought, and was a thought he didn’t want.
Albus.
He turned his head suddenly; a rush of blood seeming to flow to it, disorientating him slightly. He could have sworn he heard someone say…but no, no-one is in sight. It was just the wind hissing round him, stirring up the leaves that just wanted to lay and rot in peace, and making them play a game of tag.
He knew he’d have to go in soon; if he stayed out any later someone might notice and report him missing. He’d already missed the evening meal, something his stomach was protesting about, but he didn’t really care.
Sighing heavily he somehow got to his feet. His right leg burned like hell as cramp shot through it; he should have known better than to sit on it for hours without moving. Limping slightly as he started back, he dragged himself towards the castle and finally forced himself to consider what he’d say when he got there. He couldn’t continue taking it out on Al like this. Even if he had deserved it this time.
He knew he’d find Albus waiting for him with that pissed expression still on his face, obscured by a mask of worry that would have long since replaced the absolute outrage he’d first shown when Scorpius had punched him suddenly before blanching and rushing from the castle.
He felt a lump in his throat. What could he say? He couldn’t believe he’d actually punched the boy. As he drew nearer the lights of the castle he saw a figure walking towards him, with its wand lit up, silhouetting it against the dark expanse of the school, which looked far from welcoming in this light.
He considered turning back, since he wasn’t in the mood for idle chit-chat with whoever this clown was. Then the figure lowered the hood of its cloak and Scorpius felt his heart twist uncomfortably against his ribcage.
Albus.
He felt frozen to the spot, and apparently the other boy did too, as neither of them moved for what felt like an eternity to Scorpius. He knew he should call out, apologise, beg for the other boy’s forgiveness…even if Albus had been acting like a pompous twat and pushing Scorpius to his breaking point. He’d only got so annoyed because Al’s remarks had been so close to the truth. Scorpius inhaled deeply and he realised how long he’d been unconsciously holding his breath; the cold November air burned like hell as it raced into his lungs. He should really do something other than just stand there.
Albus was moving slowly towards him, and as he drew closer Scorpius could see he’d given the other boy a split lip. Huh-he didn’t realise he had it in him.
He watched as Albus paused for a second before eventually parting his lips to speak “I’ve finally found you then”. His voice was dry and it wavered just enough for Scorpius to tell that his friend was nervous.
“Yeah” Scorpius managed weakly in reply, still not sure if he wanted to spill apologies for the punch or angry words for the taunting.
“You coming in then?” Albus questioned, meeting Scorpius’ eyes tentatively, almost guilty in fact.
Scorpius looked deeply into those eyes, not understanding how Albus could just pretend it didn’t happen. He wanted to shake the boy and explain why he’d done it. “Yeah. I’m coming in, I…I’m sorry…about the lip I mean.”
Albus shrugged slightly. “Just get in. Once we’re in the warm you can lavish me with apologies”.
They walked in an awkward silence back to the castle and Scorpius knew they couldn’t go on like this. I tell him tonight he resolved silently.
Finally they made it indoors and Scorpius shivered slightly as the warmth of the castle rushed over him. The corridors were pretty much empty at this time of night apart from prefects wandering past from time to time.
“Albus…I…the reason I lost it…I…you ...” you know that when I hate you, it is because I love you to a point of passion that unhinges my soul.
“I know Scor,” Albus replied quietly and looked at Scorpius wryly. “I just had to be sure so I figured I’d test the water. Sorry. It got a bit out of hand didn’t it?”
Scorpius felt his breath catch slightly as a palm slid against his, where it lay at his side, and then fingers twined with his and he knew it was going to be alright…even if Albus was an arse.
