While there's definitely a place for "their eyes met across a crowded room and they fell instantly in love" fics (I've written that myself), there's something so real and so satisfying about fics that show the slow development, the missteps, the uncertainty. You did that so beautifully here. I really liked the details, like Wizarding chess, and this: "Then he said things would have been different if he and your father had been friends when they started at Hogwarts." While my wicked little H/D heart takes that one way, I also think, on a more profound level, that yes: the entire progress of the war might have been different.

You ended it at such a nice, hopeful place. I love that they have the whole rest of the holiday to be together and get closer before having to face everyone else.
