WHEN IT RAINS

A much needed rain was what Wyatt Cain woke to that morning, fat droplets of water splashing against the glass doors that would lead out onto the balcony. He sat up slowly, blinking away his sleep and looking around the large and still dark bedroom. A dim blue glow from early morning filtered in through the doors, and for a moment he wanted nothing more than to lay back down and fall asleep. He glanced to his left however, and knew he couldn't.

DG was still asleep, lying on her side and facing him. Her lips were slightly parted, though curved up into a small smile, and her hands were under her cheek. She was just barely covered by the heavy blanket, and her milky skin seemed to have an unearthly shine to it in the dim lighting. Even if she hadn't been naked she would've looked enticing.

It was with much disdain that Cain forced himself to get out of her bed and reach blindly for his clothes. He hated having this secret...thing with DG, he was much too old for things like that, but he had a small feeling that Ahamo wouldn't appreciate his youngest daughter being involved with him. He wasn't too worried about the Queen, ironically, as it seemed she already knew of their relationship -- the sly looks she often passed him made him feel like she could read his mind. He knew she was probably waiting for him to propose to DG, but neither of them were ready for that.

After pulling his pants on, he perched on the edge of the mattress to get his boots on, and he felt DG stir behind him. He glanced over his shoulder as she rolled onto her back, throwing a slender arm over her eyes with a sleepy sigh. By her breathing, he knew she was awake.

"Mornin'," he offered in a low tone. "Sorry if I woke you."

"Leaving?" She asked him, voice sounding almost rusty from her slumber -- something that unintentionally sent sparks through Cain's body. She didn't have to do a lot to get him going, that was for sure.

"Second thinking it," he admitted, though he went back to lacing up his boots.

She gave a little laugh, and the bed shifted as she moved again. Another glance over his shoulder and he found she was now sitting up against the headboard, the blanket tucked under her arms. She was still wearing a smile, and the glint in her wide blue eyes made Cain think of her mother -- as if she could read his mind.

"So come back to bed," she said, covering her mouth with a wrist as she yawned lightly. "Do you know how early it is?"

Cain tried not to yawn himself, and he stood up nodding. He grabbed his shirt from the floor and pulled it on, fingers moving easily over the buttons. She watched in silence as he finished, but as he turned away to look for his hat -- he always managed to lose it in her room; he'd have to start taking it off before he came -- she spoke again.

"Ahamo is not going to come in here," she said, voice faltering as she said her father's name -- despite how long she'd been back in the O.Z. she hadn't quite gotten used to calling him 'Dad.' "Especially at this hour."

"It's not that," Cain lied, picking up the gown she'd been wearing the night before to check underneath it. No hat. He draped the dress over a close chair, and went back to looking.

"You're not very good at lying, you know," she said, more laughter in her voice. Another pause, "Looking for something?"

"Maybe," Cain threw her a little glance. "Or maybe I know where it's at, and am just stalling to spend more time with you."

"Sounds like you, but no, you don't know where it is," she said simply.

He fought to keep his eyes from rolling, and as he started to look away from her, she moved for something. A second or two later, she produced his hat, which had been on the other side of the bed. He straightened, smirking slightly, as she placed the hat on her own head, grinning widely and teasingly. It was too big for her, but there was definitely something pleasing about the way it looked on her.

"See?" She asked. "You didn't know where it was."

"I would've found it," he said, nearing the bed.

She moved away slightly, still smiling playfully at him, and still managing to keep the blanket around her. "What's the matter, Mr. Cain?" She asked, "Can't leave without your hat?"

Instead of answering, he placed his hands on his hips and forced the smirk away from his face. Of course, she didn't fall for that. He could practically see the gears shifting in her brain, and he knew there was no way he was leaving the bedroom this morning until she said he could.

"I don't see why you like it so much anyway," she said, before standing up. Keeping the blanket around her, she moved away from the bed, turning her back on him and nearing the center of the room. She glanced over one of her shoulders. "Actually, it is kind of comfortable now."

"What are you doing?" He asked, starting around the bed and keeping his hands on his hips.

"Trying to help you get over this silly worry of yours," she said, with a roll of her eyes. "I'm sure nobody would mind if you stayed in bed until the sun was actually up, you know."

He started to say something, but his throat cut off his own words as he took in a deep breath. DG had just let the blanket fall to the floor, and she gave him another smile, though her cheeks had flushed considerably, as she placed her hands on her own hips, as if mocking him. He locked gazes with her, quirking a brow at her, and tried not to show what was really racing through his head.

"I may be a man, DG, but I'm not so easily tempted," he said.

Her brave smile turned into a sly one, and she took a step towards him, reaching up with one hand to trace her fingers along the brim of the hat. "I'll keep the hat on," she said, "Is that tempting?"

A sudden mental image came to his head, and he had to look away from her. He rubbed at one of his eyes distractedly, and chuckled. "DG," he started, but words failed him.

"Come here," she said softly.

He couldn't tell if it was a plea or an order, but it didn't matter now -- he'd caved, and whether or not he wanted to, he was already crossing the room towards her. Her smile widened and as he reached her, she slid her arms around his neck, pulling herself closer to him. Their lips met, but he didn't give her a real kiss, deciding instead that things were going to go his way if he had to stay -- he was going to tease her as much as she'd just teased him.

When he pulled away from her she gave him a quizzical look, but before she could say anything, he'd swept her off her feet. He then carried her, bridal-style, back to the bed and laid her down. When he straightened, he started to unbutton his shirt now, almost cursing her in his mind for making him change it.

He wouldn't say so, but maybe he was easily tempted. He couldn't help it if he was suddenly thinking that today was the perfect day to stay in bed.
