FF: Phantasm: Part 1

Disclaimers et al see Prologue.

Part I: - My Fatal Desire.

Stepping inside the break room. We're greeted by Nick and Warrick. We both say our hellos as we walk in.

"Hey ladies..." Greg makes his presence known, as he darts in behind Sara. If I didn't know better that he was checking her out again.

"Hey Greg." Sara deadpans smiling at him, "Hoping for some excise outside the lab today?" She asks me, as she moves to sit down.

"Maybe." He replies as he bounds over to the coffee machine, he takes the pot out, sniffing it, "Ah, no one's managed to find my secret stash just yet."

"Is that the one behind that rather large biology textbook in the finger print lab?" Sara replies as she picks up a journal.

"Or is the one the one stashed behind that really out of place cereal box in the cupboard over there?" I add, as I settle down next to Sara.

Greg's expression is priceless, he pouts, then huffs out of the break room, probably to go and find new places to hide his precious coffee.

"We really should call him Golem." Sara notes fondly, "But instead of being obsessed with the one ring to rule them all, he's obsessed with his coffee beans." She looks at me, then mimics, "Myyy precioussss." She hisses.

I laugh, leaning in and pressing a quick kiss on the cheek. "Myyy preciousss." I whisper in her ear. Causing her to go a lovely shade of red.

Which is duly noted by Warrick and Nick who smirk and snigger at our interactions. Nice to know that we provide amusement.

Gil chooses this time to appear, he seems a little disturbed, "Were you teasing Greg again?" He asks us. We all shake our heads, and look innocently at him. He isn't fooled for one second. He knows us all too well, he sighs and then proceeds to hand out our assignments.

Sara departs with Nick on a multiple. I'm informed that I'm behind on my paper work so I have to catch up. Great, I'm 'grounded'. Well it probably makes a change from Sara being grounded because she's worked so much overtime. Hopefully I've started to make a dent on that habit.

I sigh, then take my pile of papers and disappear into one of the quieter labs. And knuckle down to work.

20 minutes later, my mind had wandered. Back the Marlin case. And the things that stirred up.

She was seemingly obsessed with butterflies. They were everywhere. One of the doctors who fooled around with her was seduced by her showing him her tattoo.

Men are so easy. I absently think. My pen taps. Or Debbie was such an effortless seductress.

My pen hovers. In my mind I see Debbie lying down encouraging some faceless man to lift up her top, flashing a sultry smile and a look in her eyes. "Here, take a look at my butterfly tattoo." It's so easy for her. She made it easy for herself. I'd think those guys would hit on anything in a skirt. Doctors with the egos the size of a small country, think they're God's gift to women.

Sara isn't like that. She's not the one who seeks them out. I could never imagine Sara doing that. A predator going after her prey, always aggressive, always wanting their attention. That isn't Sara. She likes seeking attention, but that's more to be praised. I know there's at least two men who would love Sara Sidle to seduce them, but that's not going to happen.

Seduction is not really a trait that I link with Sara. Well not as blatant as that. Sara's different. She doesn't need to flaunt or provoke. Sara is more sensual than that. She likes to dress up, let her see my reactions to what she wears. She likes to please me, seeking my attention. Not anyone else's. Just me. I think she's always been like that, seeking out the one she wants attention.

I do that. Out of habit, out of comfort, out of ritual. I'm used to going after them. I admit, I did go after Sara but that was different. I didn't use any of my 'arsenal' or 'bag of tricks', or when Eddie was pissed off at me, my 'whore tricks', just a simple kiss...

Walking up to her apartment, I found the address. I just knocked on the door. It was late, mid morning. The door had opened, she was sleepy, clothes rumpled from sleep, tired. She was cute. I didn't need to do much. Just press her against the nearest flat surface and kiss her. I wanted to block out what I'd seen, what I'd felt. I had tried to go to Paul...but that feel right. Something to block it out. I don't even know why after all this time. But I don't regret it.

And we've been together ever since. Bar splitting briefly when Eddie's case came up. But we got back together and have been stronger than ever. She loves me. And I love her. Simple as that. Lindsey thinks she's cool. Sara admits that she's never the best person around children. Brenda likes her, she still visits her now. Usually before bedtime, some how Sara Sidle has become - for Brenda - a person who can chase away any of the nightmares that might happen. That makes me smile. It's no often that Sara can be described as a white knight but it's a hero thing, and I know that she likes Brenda as well. I think she kinda likes being someone's hero.

I look up, seeing her leaning against the door, wearing coveralls which are tied around her waist. It's simple and incredibly seductive. Something in her eyes, the way she is posing... It's sexy and secure. Her eyes are open, they smirk at me. Just their owner who's making her way towards me...

I sigh then shake my head, trying to get my head in gear. I snap out of my doppelgänger day dream and Sara related thoughts and try and focus on the paperwork I'm supposed to be doing. I don't need Gil trying to rip me a new one over the fact that I haven't been doing my paper work.

"Hey." I hear as I turn over another page.

I look up it's Sara holding a container of coffee, hands wrapped around the paper cup. "Hey." I smile. "What ya got there?"

"Something my hard working girlfriend might need." She gives me a rakish smile. "Bought in especially."

I look around and bring her down for a quick thank you kiss. She puts my coffee down, "If you're bored, I've got some lovely pictures some blood splatter that you might find interesting to look at."

I smile, "What was case?"

"5 males found in a car, each with their brains blown out, right between the eyes. Front seat, passenger seat, back seat, no defence marks, just a load of confusing evidence. Although I do get to take a car apart." She notes softly.

"Catherine." Warrick's voice interrupts our conversation, "We've got a double in one of the underground car parks under the strip."

"Be safe." Sara kisses me gently before she departs. I hear greet her Warrick and head back to where she came from.

I look at the coffee, then I start ordering the paperwork that I have done, "I'll meet you outside Rick." I call out, "I just need to drop some paperwork off." I reply as I gather the files and the coffee.

"Sure Cath." Warrick replies.

Me and Warrick greet Brass. The yellow tape is surrounding two BMWs. "Happy holidaying couple come down to collect their rental and then see this." Brass jerks a thumb toward the two cars. "They've both been taken to Desert Palm. When you see it you'll understand."

I raise my eyebrow and exchange a look with Warrick as we move over to the cars. And I see why.

Two male corpses are sitting in the passenger seats. I assume they're male because someone has excised the facial tissue as well as the eyeballs. I also see no hands. It is pretty vomit worthy. Empty eyes, seeing nothing of the space in front of them.

"Any leads?" Warrick asks as we start to process the scene. I'm taking photos. The flash lights up the dark area that the cars have been left in.

"Chasing up the CCTV, but nothing yet." Brass tells us. "Mr and Mrs didn't really say much, they were too busy trying not to loose their dinner."

I move around to the back, both cars' trunks are open slightly. I take a photograph then call Warrick to help me process.

We make easy work of the hoods of the trunks, then we both open the trunks, someone's spray painted 'Killer' and 'Rapist' on the inside. Tasteful. I take a photo, "You got the same?" I ask Warrick as he lifts the camera away from his face.

"Rapist and killer?" He asks me. At my nod, "Yeah."

I look up and frown, "I've got something here." I tell him, I reach up and grasp the tiny piece of paper and unroll it. 'I pray you in your letters, when you shall these unlucky deeds relate, speak of me as I am. Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice. Then must you speak of one that loved not wisely, but too well. Of one not easily jealous, but, being wrought, perplexed in the extreme; of one whose hand, like the base Judean, threw a pearl away, richer than all his tribe.' It is typed up, no chance to ID the writer.

"Uh..." I hear David the assistant coroner, "They excised something else." He notes as they bodies are removed from the seats.

That gets our attention, I divert my attention from putting the note into the evidence bag.

"What else?" I hear Warrick ask.

David pokes his head around to where we are, and makes a vague gesture, he's blushing beet red.

"Someone took the family jewels?" I ask him.

He nods, I won't ask him how he found that little tid bit out, but I bet it wasn't a pleasant way. "Someone had left their flies open." He notes almost cheerfully.

Both me and Warrick share a look.

David sighs, "I'll get some dental impressions done as soon as I get back, they might be a little easier to id than DNA."

"Thanks David." I thank him.

He just gives me his famous half smile, "No problem Catherine." He says before disappearing back to supervise taking the bodies out of the cars.

It's another fun night in Sin City aka Las Vegas. All the glitz in the world couldn't hide the grizzly side that we see.

Tonight's just another reminder.

All that glitters certainly doesn't mean that it's gold.
