Summery: Do you see what I see?
Author's Note: I personally like the idea of someone who looks like someone else but is totally different, and the reactions that it causes. The title comes from my trip with the thesaurus on my computer with synonyms of 'Ghost' and phantasm came up and it fitted perfectly. ;D. And all the definitions seem to lead it's self even more.
Phantasm: fan'tazm n lit. Something unreal or illusory. Or n a vain, airy appearance, fancied vision, an apparition, a spectre, counterfeit (obs.) an impostor. A vision of an absent person[13th century. Via French fantasme < Greek phantasma < phantazesthai "appear" < phainein "bring to light"]
Phantasmagoria: fan-taz-ma-gō'ri-a n confusing succession of scenes. Or n a fantastic series of illusive images or of real forms. An exhibition of illusions, a crowd of dim or unreal figures. [Early 19th century. < French fantasmagorie "art of making optical illusions" < fantasme (see phantasm)]
Prologue:- Situ.
It's a blink of an eye thing. A split second. Been and gone. Looking at the corpse that lies in situ in front of me. Gil is kneeling there. I'm not surprised he sees it. We both do. Blink and it's gone. No the light changes and it's gone.
She isn't her. She never could be her. The case was put away, no closure for the families, we all know who killed her. But no one will pay. For the murder of the butterfly woman and her boyfriend. The ghost of someone who she'll never be. A bloodied ghoul. A phantasm, so close yet so far.
But now watching her standing in my - no our - kitchen making coffee, I can see it. Even though the case has been closed for weeks. I don't know why it's crept up on me today. Maybe tiredness and a scattered mind.
"You're watching me." She chides me softly. Her hands lay flat on the kitchen surface. "What's wrong?" She turns to me.
"How can you tell that I was watching you?" I ask dodging the question.
She folds her arms over her chest. She's dressed in tight jeans and a wine coloured shirt. The buttons open so I can see the line of her throat and collarbone. "Your eyes are a physical thing for me." She tells me softly. "I can always feel when they're on me." Sara notes smiling.
I walk over to her, she smiles at me. I pull her into my arms. She wraps her arms around me. "Cath?" She asks me.
I hush her with a soft kiss. She doesn't resist me. I tease her mouth open. She doesn't resist as she lets me deepen the kiss.
She tastes of coffee, mint and something that is completely Sara. I push her against the worktop.
Sara pulls away, I try to follow her but she just laughs softly, "I'd love to make out with you but we have work tonight. Remember?" She chides me again, kissing my cheek, "And I would love you to get a supervisor job, but I think I'd prefer it because you earned it, not because Gil Grissom has had a heart attack and or he faints because he spots a love bite the size of a small country. That would be really fun to do CPR on him. Mainly 'cause of the beard. And there's no way in hell I'm giving Gil Grissom CPR." She wrinkles her nose. "I'll leave that to someone else."
I laugh at that, she smiles showing the gap between her teeth, which I think is cute. She kisses me again, a quick peck before sliding out of my grasp and finishing the coffee before we head into work. Coffee then work.
I cradle the cup of coffee in my hands, she sips hers, peering over the cup watching me. "What do you want to do when we have the night off in a couple days time?" I ask her.
Sara looks at me, then smiles. "Maybe take Lindsey somewhere for dinner, then watch movies?"
"Rent a few? Some ones that we all can watch, and then a few that are a little more adult." I suggest arching my left eyebrow at her.
Sara laughs gently, "Maybe. You certainly do like to watch don't you?" She raises an eyebrow.
"Mmm." I tell her, before she smiles, "I love to watch you Sara." I tell her, as I put the coffee down.
She looks at me, then it happens again. A flicker of Debbie Marlin, bound to the bed, grasping hold of the red silk ties that she's be tied to the bed with...
"Catherine?" Sara asks me, her warm hand cup my cheek, "Catherine where are you?" She asks me again.
I look at her, then I move my hands and wrap them around her waist surprising her by kissing her again. This time I get my way a lot easier mainly because I've surprised her. Sara is a lot more pliable when she's surprised.
I pull away and whisper into her ear, "Do you want to revise that statement?" I ask meaning the statement about making out with me.
Sara blinks then licks her lips, I know that she's tasting the lip stick I've left on lips, "Yes, if you continue to kiss me like that I know that we will be late, because I don't want to explain that I've got a bite mark on shoulder." She smirks, "You know that would make Greg's head explode."
I laugh, then sigh, moving my hands, tracing them over her hips, then tracing them up her back and then I rest them on her shoulders, she leans for another long slow kiss that cools us both down. "I know it would, but I can't help it myself. And we better get going before I forget all my good intentions." I promise her as I pull away, "Meet you at the car."
I turn away from her, but I hear her groan softly and mutter, "Catherine."
I turn around and flash her a smile, "C'mon Sidle we don't want to be late." I tell her as I walk out, "I'm driving!"
"Tease!" Sara calls.
"And you love it!" I call back.
