Thank you for saying this. I've got a lot of effusive proclamations of hope on my friends list, and it makes me uncomfortable. Maybe it's just because this is not how we do politics in my country (though some here wish it were); I prefer my politicians to be uncontroversial technocrats with limited mandate and no Messianic chorus, kn'a'm sa'in'?

I've also felt uncomfortable about the readiness of Democratic supporters to accuse Republicans of being divisive, and then maintaining in the same breath that only an illiterate, a bigot, or a nutter would vote for McCain. I mean, the dude made some bad choices, but there were still many good reasons - not reasons I found compelling, but reasons I could recognize as reasons - to vote for him. Blarg.

As for the race thing: The identification of Obama, Halle Berry, Tiger Woods, et al. as "black" or "African-American" is not a statement to the effect that they ought to be excluded. It's a recognition that they are in a category of people who have been excluded and continue to be excluded, ( ... )

I guess I see what you're saying about the race thing, but I also think we can both agree that in this campign it's gone far beyond the confines of the explanation you put forward ( ... )
