The Beach | Birthday Blues {BYOA}

With the will of the hotel to create just about any scenario it wished, it was often hard to keep track of the seasons going by. However, if one was to find themselves wandering along a long stretch of sand as the sun slowly began to dip below the horizon, it would truly feel like summer. It was obviously fated that Amelia found herself wandering ( Read more... )

Funny how often Aldray found himself crossing paths so often with Amelia. Not something he complained about, just observed.

This situation was an odd one, to say the least, with her out here alone, dressed like that. He wasn't sure what to think of it, but it was rather obvious that something had her troubled.

Aiming to see if he can turn her mood around, Aldray steps up near her, and places a hand on her shoulder. "While what you're wearing is quite lovely on you, Miss Amelia, I'm afraid it doesn't seem suited to swimming."

Oddly enough, while not idea attire, it did cover more a bathing suit, and Amelia had at least had the decency to tie a sarong around her waist. The light material skimmed her legs due to the breeze, distracting the princess further. That is until a familiar hand landed on her shoulder.

Tilting her head up to look at the cleric, she managed a small smile, not wanting to give herself away. She troubled him enough at times already.

"I wasn't intending to go into the water anyway. I was just..." she paused a moment, letting her eyes slip shut as if trying to recall what had possessed her to wander out to the beach at all. "...thinking."

Aldray would object to the idea of her troubling him, if he knew she had that thought.

His hand slipped away from her shoulder, and reached into his pocket, pulling out a coin. He tossed it in the air once, then held it out to her. "A copper piece for your thoughts?"

Naturally if she thought about it, Amelia knew he would protest, but she still didn't wish to use him to offload her concerns about missing her home. Thus, she waved her hand at him, even if the phrasing made her giggle.

"It's not important, really Mr Aldray." she insisted. It was hard to dance around the subject, since she refused to outright lie. But it wasn't the sort of thing she could just tell people. Surely it would sound like she was expecting something from it, and she refused to put her friends in that position.

On one hand, he got her to laugh - a plus. On the other hand, she insisted it wasn't important. He didn't want to press her for information, so he pockets the coin. "If you say so, Miss Amelia."

He wasn't going to force anything out of her, he wasn't insisting she talk, and yet the healer felt awful for waving off his help like that. She didn't wish to come across as if she didn't trust, because she did, very much so. How did this attempt at not being a pest just make things worse?

"Well, it's not as if it matters. I mean, no time passes between here at home, so really, it's not like I'm missing the chance to do what I usually do today..." she mumbled, digging her heels into the sand as a means of distraction.

"One of the stranger things about this place, to be sure," he says, then gives her a curious look. He hadn't intended to pry, but there was that opening. If she was offering it...

"What do you normally do today?"

Really, how was she supposed to resist now? Aldray's kindness had this amazing ability to disarm her entirely, though she couldn't help her voice becoming softer the more she spoke. The last two words were just a whisper really, as her eyes fell to gaze at her feet.

"Well, quite a lot actually. But there are only a couple of things I wish I could be doing today. Just seeing my daddy, visiting my mother, I don't really like too much of a fuss on...my birthday."

There's a quiet "Ohhh..." that comes from the cleric. He reaches over, patting her on the shoulder. "I see." Much as they've helped each other out, he felt that the offer to do anything if she needed it didn't need to be spoken by this point.

When she finally found the will to look up at him, she took note of the hand and his tone of voice. Aldray wasn't that hard to read, and from all they had been through, she could tell what he was trying to get across. Smiling up at him, she nods in response to the silent offer. "Thank you."

There's a warm smile that crosses his face at the thanks. He squeezes her shoulder, then nods. "You're quite welcome, Amelia. I know the feeling all too well myself."

She nodded, moving to cover his hand with one of her own, though it was fairly smaller in comparison. "Well, I suppose we should be glad that at least we don't have to be lonely here." she replied softly. Amelia had to admit, meeting the cleric was one of the few things she was glad she had the chance to do, even if it meant being stuck so far away from home.

Her words make that smile widen a bit, and that hand on her shoulder moves to the other side, moving him into a sideways hug with the princess. "That's very true..."

Amelia didn't resist, content to relax into the hug, still shivering a bit due to the wind, but appearing to be in better spirits. "I am happy we got to meet Mr Aldray, I really am." she smiled up at him, this time more genuine and at ease.

That improved mood was quite the welcome sight to the cleric, and he squeezed her a bit in the hug. "As am I, Miss Amelia. And while I lack a gift, I do wish you a happy birthday," he adds, smiling back at her.

He did notice the shiver, though. "Would you like to find a warmer place for the evening?"

"Thank you, that's enough for me." she replied, leaning back into him with a smile. She was certainly more protected from the wind while like this, but he had a point. Perhaps it would be better to find some place warmer.

"That might be for the best. I think there's a beach house somewhere along the cliffside." she remarked, glancing up at him.
