CAST (IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE):
dinner date, a dionysius/hestia friendship fic, pg
Hestia and Dionysius have a nice dinner out, and discuss some important decisions. (Written for the lovely
liketrains, who wanted more Hestia/Dionysius friendship fic.)
“I miss our conversations,” he said plaintively. “And you know what a soft spot I have for you, gorgeous. I just like to make sure you’re doing okay.” (1,099 words)
“You know, honey, I was starting to think you’d forgotten all about me,” he said, sipping at his wine.
Hestia smiled, ripping a hunk of French bread in two. “You won’t let me,” she said. “Always popping around corners unexpectedly, cornering me at every family gathering, showing up at the door with fruit baskets and bottles of wine…”
“I miss our conversations,” he said plaintively. “And you know what a soft spot I have for you, gorgeous. I just like to make sure you’re doing okay.”
“I’ll always appreciate your concern, Dionysuis,” she said, reaching over the table to pat his hand. “But you should know I’m fine. Great, even. Hephaestus is wonderful.”
“Oh, I’ve never worried on that count,” Dionysius said quickly. “Heph’s the nicest guy in the family. One glance at the pair of you and anyone could tell how good you are together. Even a blind man could see that.”
“I think love’s made you sentimental,” she said. “It’s nice.”
“What are you talking about?” he said quickly, spearing a potato slice with his fork. “I’ve always been this romantic and charming.”
“And have you and Ariadne decided on a new wedding date yet?”
“Not quite.”
“…But it’s still going to happen, right?” Hestia asked, brow crinkling with concern. “You two are still happy together?”
“Oh most assuredly,” he said quickly. “Ari and I are plenty happy. The wedding’s still on, it’s just… You know me, babe. I’m an off-the-cuff sort of guy. Those big swanky affairs planned to a T aren’t my scene. It’s not Ariadne’s, either. We’re more spontaneous and fun than all that. The pressure just got a little too uncomfortable.”
“And here I thought you cancelled just to make Aphrodite and Hera angry,” Hestia said.
“I’m not that petty.” He finished off the wine and raised his empty glass. A waiter bustled over immediately. “Thanks for coming out to dinner tonight, gorgeous.”
“I’ve missed our conversations, too,” she said.
“We should make this more of a habit. So, tell me: how are your enjoying your new living arrangements?”
She blushed prettily-Hestia may not technically be “the virgin” any more, but it was clear she would never lose all of her innocence. “It’s nice. More than nice. I hadn’t realized how lonely I’d been, in my empty apartment, until I had someone to share with.”
“It is rather nice, having company every day,” Dionysius agreed, eyeing a passing dessert cart. “Especially when it’s pretty company. Or, in your case, handsome company.”
“Hephaestus is handsome,” she agreed, blushing a darker red. “It’s such a shame, that everyone else can only see his crippling. Legs are such a silly thing to focus on, when the rest of the man is so incredible.”
“Hestia, you’re positively glowing,” Dionysius said with undisguised glee. “Not-quite-marital bliss suits you.”
“Well, speaking of that,” Hestia said hesitantly, clearing her throat. “I thought I’d tell you first, since you’ve always been so supportive…” She slipped a small box from a pocket on her dress, popping it open and sliding it across the table.
“Is this… Is this what I think it is?” he demanded, picking up the box with wide eyes. “Hestia, are you and Heph making it official?”
She smiled with a flash of dimples, nodding.
“Mazel tov, sweetheart!” he crowed, coming round the table to hug her fiercely. “If Artemis gives you any grief, I’ll pants her at a televised tennis match. Does Heph need a best man? I’m officially volunteering since I am, as you know, the best man.”
“Thanks, dear,” she laughed, kissing him fondly on the cheek. “I’ll be sure to let him know. Or maybe you could tell him yourself-we want to have a little party to celebrate this weekend, and only a select few are getting invitations.”
“And I made the list? I’m flattered.”
“You and Ariadne, Sephie and Hades, Perseus and his family, Eros and Psyche. A group that can get along for a couple hours with a minimum of drama. Hopefully.”
“With Perseus’ whole brood in attendance? I’m sorry, dear, but I think you may be dreaming. You’ll be cleaning crumbs out of the carpet and scraping pudding off the walls for hours afterwards, I’ve seen those little terrors in action.”
“Then you’ve never seen them around Hephaestus,” she said as they retook their seats. “The kids adore him. They’ll behave if he asks them to.”
“I’m more than happy for you, Hestia-I’m incandescent. Do you have a date yet?”
“Soon, that’s all we know right now. We were actually hoping to wait until you and Ariadne made it official-sort of sneak in quietly in the calm after the storm. But if you two aren’t quite ready, we may just have to take the bullet and deal with a social brouhaha.”
“Dearest heart, light of my life, wind beneath my wings, you know I would do everything in my power to make life easier for you,” Dionysius said devoutly, reaching for her hand and bringing it to his lips for a gentlemanly kiss. “Is it next weekend, or the weekend after, that Poseidon’s having that fancy charity cruise?”
“Next weekend, I believe,” she said, somewhat confused.
“Then tell Heph to plan for a late July wedding.”
“Oh, Dionysius, don’t rush anything on our account-”
“Rush? Ari and I were supposed to be god and wife over two months ago. And, frankly, we’ve been feeling a bit restless. Might as well do the deed now, so we can stop feeling like we’re constantly being watched. And you know how dearly I do enjoy making a scene. That cruise will be just the ticket.”
“Anything to drive Aphrodite mad and steal her thunder, eh?” Hestia said knowingly.
“Who said anything about Aphrodite?” he demanded, all innocence.
“You know very well that she planned the entire event.”
“Well, a surprise wedding at sea will be just the sort of publicity she needs. She couldn’t possibly be upset by that, if the press coverage gets the charity an extra few thousands in donations. I’m simply doing my civic duty, darling.”
Hestia smiled with a shake of her head. “Everyone’s always asking me how we can be such good friends, you being what you are.”
“A devilishly handsome and charming rogue?”
“A troublemaker. And sometimes I just can’t think of a logical reply.”
“Logic is highly overrated, m’girl,” he said flippantly, snatching a slice of cheesecake off a passing cart. “Sometimes, you’ve just gotta do what feels right.”
“Indeed,” she laughed, stealing a forkful of his cake.
