mouse over the Hindu for translation.

The customs official had assured St. John that a rickshaw was far preferable to traveling through the city on foot, but as he clung with whitened knuckles while the native raced over cobblestone streets, a bone-bruising jolt past parasoled ladies and peasant carts and beggars with twisted legs, he wondered if it was merely a matter of becoming accustomed to the conveyance or if he was the butt of some foolish joke. He kept his face stern and dispassionate, but churned inside with nervous tension and sensations even more concerning; the mal de mer he never experienced at sea had apparently chosen to finally visit him on land. The need to make less haste became more pressing, and he leaned forward to request his runner move slower.

“Dhimi, accha mahodaya krpaya ja'o!”

His request was resolutely ignored. St. John thumped his fist angrily upon one of the two wooden poles the native ran between. The native, without breaking stride, turned his head to peer questioningly at his English passenger.

Hey there, Anon. I was wondering how you wanted this tagged. Would you like it tagged as a separate fill? Or leave it untagged and have it stand as part of the original fill? Let me know! :)

I have been wondering that myself :D

It's not really a fill for anything, other than a not-terribly-serious request/challenge by poziomeczka, and it's barely related to the Eagle... maybe just leave it untagged and let people find it or not. Like an easter egg! (with tentacles.)

Chapter 3

In which the Rev. St. John enters an Officer's Club, recites a Psalm to Good Effect, and deepens his Acquaintance with Cpt. Aquilaine. The British Officer's East India Club was the sort of lodgings that might be found in any decent city in England; the exception being the servants, Indians to a man who dressed not in the typical British servant's clothing but all in white-white trousers, billowing white tunics over top and white turbans. They padded silently over the lobby's thick carpeting on bare feet. Dark green potted palms sat in every corner, flanked by comfortable-looking stuffed horsehide chairs. A portrait of the young Queen in her coronation robes hung on one wall ( ... )

The room quieted for a moment as the other men took in his title and stern appearance; St. John suspected the majority were not regular Sunday men. A marine at the far side of the table, already rather well into his cups, snickered and wondered aloud if Reverend Somber would question them all on their catechism after the dessert.

He felt the anger he ever struggled to control burn two hot spots on his cheeks, and he narrowed his gaze at the marine. A more awkward silence fell over the room and Cpt. Aquilaine shifted in the chair next to him. St. John tried to settle his mind and think of an appropriate response.

Ye are the light of the world. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. He gave the room a cold smile. “Shall I give a blessing before the meal ( ... )

When the dinner had finished-soup, roast beef with new potatoes, sprouts and carrots with fragrant rice, Yorkshire pudding and a trifle made with a creamy yellow fruit called mango-St. John and Cpt. Aquilaine retired to his quarters to smoke and talk. Sanyal had been through, tidied up the sitting room, straightened the writing deck and left out a small but quality selection of pipe tobacco, cigars, brandy and gin. St. John eagerly tamped a pipeful while his host lowered himself a bit heavily into a chair and leaned over to the brandy ( ... )

“My father was a German, a corporal in the Prussian army who hailed from Bitburg. Aquilaine is an unusual last name even for a German but I am told that his home, Islek, is called Aquilaine by the locals so I suppose that is how it came about. After the defeat of Napoleon he traveled to Bath to take the waters, hoping to heal from a lingering illness contracted in France. In Bath he met my mother who was on holiday. She was captivated by him, he was charmed by her, and before long they had run off to London together. Eventually, when she was reaching her period of confinement, he left for Germany claiming poverty, and she was forced to return to her brother's house in Silchester, where she had lived since their parents passed away. You can imagine how it must have looked, returning in her condition with no husband and no promise of engagement. But her brother-my Uncle-was a generous man and allowed her to live under his roof again; he even went so far as to let my father me visit on several occasions, although all I remember is a ( ... )

Nonny thanks you all for reading and enjoying and commenting and complimenting! There will be more. Much more.St. John sipped tentatively at his tonic-water. “I have no tale of woe, Cpt. Aquilaine, so there will be little for us to commiserate about unless we compare stories of Cambridge, where I also was privileged to study. I grew up in a good household in Stoke-on-Trent with two devoted sisters, studied theology at university, and after several years as a parish rector felt called to come to India. Here I will spend a year teaching at Queen's Street Secondary School, which will provide me with time to further learn the language and customs of the land. Then I intend to set off by foot, led only by God, traveling and spreading the Word.” He did not mention Jane Eyre, although a refusal of marriage might well qualify as woeful. Such things were in the past, and could not effect him now ( ... )
