Controlling his anger taxed his mind; checking his passion wearied his spirit. Jane had accused him of lacking passion, turned down his proposal of marriage because he could not, would not show her the spirit and ardor she craved; now she was, he had no doubt, under the roof of Mr. Rochester, risking her mortal soul for fleeting love and more base affections. Poor, wayward Jane, so misunderstanding. Not incurious or thick, but simply blind to the feelings and urges of those other than herself. For St. John had passion, passion burning and bubbling up out of him, scarcely controlled during the day and often keeping him awake at night so he paced the decks under the stars, a familiar sight to the night watches. Reverend Crow they called him, and he did not take offense, aware as he was of how it looked for him to stalk the ship's deck in his greatcoat and hat even during the humid rainstorms that plagued this part of the globe.

i don't know this canon but omg this is so brilliantly written! i can't tell you how impressed i am with how well you've adopted the style of the era. you're single-handedly making me want to watch the original material and i'm not even the biggest fan of this era in history. xD

I'm really intrigued by this story! :) St. John was never a favorite of mine, but this fic is making me interested in him as a character, even outside of St. John/Marcus possibilities. And I'm really amazed by your attention to detail in trying to capture the period.

[So I hope you won't mind that I have a few nitpicks: You keep referring to 'reading/writing Hindu' when it should be 'Hindi,' a 'Hindu' being a person who follows Hinduism. Also, just out of curiosity, what are you using as a source for the Hindi and the Bengali?]

I'm glad you're enjoying the story so far! I don't mind if you nitpick, as long as I can nitpick back :)

** referring to the "Hindu language" (or Hindustani) rather than the "Hindi language" is incorrect now but perfectly appropriate for the 1840s (OED -- Colebrooke in Life (1873) "In the vernacular dialects, or even in the Hindu language [i.e. Sanskrit].")

** my Hindi comes from Google Translate, which is then transliterated. It's probably crap but IDGAF because life is short and I've got some porn to write. My "Bengali" is also Hindi, because Google Translate doesn't do Bengali.

** if Hindu/Hindi bugs you I HIGHLY suggest avoiding Chapter 13 (In which the Rev. St. John is forcefully and repeatedly violated by a Tentacle Monster)
