[ Yep, this guy's still around, and this time his transmission is on purpose and coming to you from inside his tent, judging from the slanted green canvas walls around him and the constant drumming of rain upon the cloth. Light from above suggests a lantern hung from the central support rod, and he's sipping from a steaming thermos, looking

[Look at Lirael, branching out... but it's Ace. He's a friend. She can leave text behind for once. Besides, she's still a fuzzy-headed from pain-meds and the almost-concussion, and concentrating on typing is more than she wants to deal with. And since it's voice, one can at least kind of tell that she's smiling.]

Hello, Ace. You look like you've been busy.... [In fact, she's reminded of Coyote's little friends, and wonders briefly whatever happened to those animals and the karakasa keeping them dry.

But not for long. She drifts back to Ace's image on her computer screen, instead.] If you'd like to come someplace dry, there's room at the hospital. If you can find your way here.

[Lirael looks at him in some consternation, feeling badly for him, if he's actually not smiling, for once.] Was it that bad...?

[He hasn't said much about it, after all, and she still doesn't know anything other than how strange it is, where he's from. Now he has her worried that it's some terrible place with war and Dead and slavery, or something.]

[ Yes, Lirael, Ace does have a serious face. ]

It's a place where nothing ever changes, no matter what you do. Everyone has a role that you can't escape.

[ Another moment, and he looks back at the image-less computer screen. He smiles again, but it doesn't sit as easily on his expression. He's aware other people don't like it here the way he does and want to go home, but he never thought he might have to. ]

Except I did, when I came here.

Oh. [Lirael frowns, thinking on that. It seems rather like her own world, in that there is a path set for some people-- like herself-- that she can't really escape... but she has no real desire to. And in her world, things change all the time, so it's obviously not the same thing.] Maybe you won't. There aren't many people who don't want to... but there's really no way of knowing, I think. I hope you don't.

[With Naoshi gone, between Ace, Tieria, Stephanie, and Anders, she doesn't want to lose anyone else she considers even halfway a friend.]

[ At that, Ace's smile settles and belongs on his face again. He's still displeased with what he just learned, of course, about the possibility of returning, but Lirael gave him something to be happy about. ]

I hope not, either. This place is the best adventure I've ever had.

[Everything for Ace-- except, apparently, thinking of his home-- seems to be fun and an adventure. Lirael can remember how that is... though she's never been that carefree about it.] I've had better, [she says.] Adventures that had purpose and actually seemed to do something good.... But I am glad you're enjoying yourself.
