[ The video feeds comes on mysteriously, with a rather fantastic view of the beach and the deceptively calm waves of the ocean. A small whimpering sound can be heard. After a moment, something furry and black passes the bottom of the screen. ]

[Though Lirael has never actually done the video thing on these computers, that doesn't mean she doesn't watch them sometimes. With her camera off, of course, because she's far too shy to want anyone to actually see her.

But from where she's working at the hospital, organizing medicines, she hears the whine, pauses in her work, and looks at the screen.]

Oh, dear Charter, the poor thing!

[Finally, something she knows something about and has no fear getting involved in! Immediately she's up, donning the bell bandolier and her sword, and hurrying out to the hut by the beach to try and rescue the wet puppy dog. She even brings a big, fluffy towel. How thoughtful of her?]

[ The soaked puppy lies down on the keyboard after a while, whimpering rather pathetically. Oh woe, woe is he, the poor wet thing...

Although clearly there is some magic to this human technology after all, as the keyboard doesn't seem to short circuit. ]

[Lirael takes a few minutes to get there-- it is halfway across the island, and all-- but despite being out of breath once she does get there, she pokes her head in... and there's the poor puppy! She comes the rest of the way in, and speaks, so the poor thing isn't startled.]

Hello, puppy....

[She has the towel draped over her handless arm, and her remaining hand halfway extended, in case the little dog wants to sniff it.]

[ He whimpers again, extra pathetically, just for her. After carefully sniffing her hand, he barks once in approval.

This girl has magic, that much is obvious. Nothing he needs to worry about, though. ]

[Awww, how cute is that! Lirael smiles, and comes closer, close enough to stroke the puppy's head with fingers that are actually pretty good at knowing what a dog likes, and to bring the towel over to start gently scrubbing at the puppy's fur.]

Let's get you dry. That can't be comfortable, you being all wet and sandy, right?

[She couldn't talk to people, but a dog? Definitely. Even if it isn't a dog like the Dog, who isn't going to talk back, she still expects acceptance and affection from a puppy like this.]

[ He preens under the attention, playing up the cuteness as much as he possibly can. He even takes the opportunity to look up at her with the most loving eyes he can muster. They just scream 'take me home with you and love me forever'.

This Death Bell Girl will do just as well as any of the other humans on the island. Especially if she kept scratching him just right there. ]

[The eyes aren't even necessary-- there is no question in Lirael's mind that she's taking this puppy home with her. The hospital could use something to lighten it up, and she could use a friend who didn't make her nervous! ... yet, anyway.]

You're a friendly little thing. I wonder if the island brought you here, like everyone else. I didn't know it brought animals.

[That would be terribly sad, if it did. Poor animals, who wouldn't even understand that! She gave him a slightly more vigorous toweling and then a scratch behind both ears and along his jawline.]

Come on. I'll see if we have something at the hospital to feed you with.

[ He gives her another cheerful little bark or two and shakes himself dry - completely ineffectively, of course, but enough to be cute. He doesn't need to eat at all, but he can pretend. The first step was to earn her trust.

The second step was to wait a few days before quietly turning every piece of furniture in the house upside down. ]

[Lirael smiles at him as he shakes off. He is so very cute! Much like how she'd imagined her own dog-sending might look, before she got the Dog.]

I'd try to carry you, but you look far too energetic... come on.

[She slings the towel over her shoulder and leads the way out of the hut, looking over her shoulder and holding out a hand for the puppy, encouragingly.]

Come on, little one. I'm sure you're hungry.

[ He follows with a cheerful gait that borders on cocky. This is going swimmingly already! Not that he would have expected anything else. He is Coyote, after all. ]

[It's hard to go wrong with Lirael with a dog, really. She led Coyote along, smiling more than she has pretty much since she's gotten to the island, and stops now and then to crouch down and offer him more scratches.]

I wonder if you have a name. You have no collar... and no one to claim you. Yet. I suppose we'll have to name you, if no one does. Would you mind that?

[Not that she really expects an answer. He's a dog, after all. But she's just fallen into the habit of talking to dogs as if they might talk back.]
