Having wasted a few moments staring from Kurt down to the microphone and back, Santana finally shook her head and pushed it away with the back of her hand. "I don't know this one," she said, and punctuated the outright lie with a (sarcastically) sympathetic frown. Anyone bored enough to watch VH1 on a Sunday afternoon at least knew of Grease, and anyone who even knew of Rachel Berry had been treated to an earful of those obnoxiously catchy lyrics every now and then. But it was half her party, too, and she didn't have to sing show tunes if she didn't want to. "How about something a little more contemporary?" she suggested. "We're turning eighteen, not eighty."

The slow reaction on Santana's part was more than enough for Kurt to raise a questioning brow, hoping that she hadn't managed to have more drinks than he would have permitted, had he been keeping an eye on her the entire time. Remembering how the last mixer had gone while the two of them were both present, Kurt had indeed made a point of trying to watch out for her whenever he had the chance; unfortunately, the party ended up being a great deal busier than he first anticipated, and so his quest had been derailed. Still, she was coherent enough to turn down the song for a clear, if not justified reason, and seemed to step onto the stage with little effort.

"As long as we don't break out the Ke$ha again," Kurt sighed, shaking his head, even as he handed the second mic over to Santana regardless. "You know, when they say that a song is timeless, I'm pretty sure that means even decades from now, people will still be singing these songs and no one's going to think worse of them for it. Grease is a pretty solid example. People watch in ( ... )

"Oh, honey," Santana shook her head, and appeared almost genuinely sympathetic as she did so. "I know your point of view is skewed due to how long you've spent in the company of Berry and friends, but no one actually sings to Grease anymore without getting mad flack for it." Even so, she took the second microphone when it was offered and set to scrolling through song list until she came across something they could both agree on. Then, with a wide smirk in Kurt's direction, she held the microphone to her lips and took it from the top.

"Only because people in Lima have very little taste," Kurt muttered under his breath, though he put on a smile soon enough when Santana's gaze brushed over him again, politely peering over at the karaoke machine to see the selection. Caught between being tempted to groan and being excited by the choice, Kurt settled for simply shaking his head with a light grin. "Spice Girls. Why am I surprised? I shouldn't be surprised; Posh Spice seems like she'd be right up your alley in terms of lifelong ambition. Fashion icon and with a hottie soccer player for a husband."

But before he could go on at length about it, the music began, Kurt nodding his head along with the beat and singing along whenever Santana fell quiet.

That Kurt's observation was right on the money came as something of a surprise to Santana. It meant that he knew her - or at least listened to her - more than almost every other Glee Club member, including those she had dated and/or slept with. (The exception, of course, was Brittany, but wasn't she always?) In a perfect world, one where being a fabulous teen gay amounted to more than guaranteed social suicide and a daily slushee facial, she could even imagine them as friends. Allies, at the very least. And because they were alike in even the smallest of ways, Santana felt confident in her assumption when she replied, "Oh, don't even try to deny you spent the better part of your formative years watching Spice World on a never-ending loop. I bet you still have the worn out VHS tape to prove it, too." She refused to believe otherwise; delighting in that film was one of the unofficial rites of passage for any little girl - or boy - growing up in the nineties ( ... )

Only after the song, Kurt finding himself more flushed and excited than he'd anticipated, did Kurt finally admit to the fact that Santana had more or less hit the nail on its head. The truth was, in terms of interests, Kurt found himself aligning most closely with both Rachel and Santana, though in completely different arenas. Rachel and him shared all of their life ambitions, their lofty goals, their dreams and desires to move back into a time more beautiful and considerate than their current. But with Santana, it was all of the guilty pleasures, the love of attitude and the desire to sparkle no matter what the cost. The love of being able to dive into anything, quality or otherwise, for the sheer enjoyment of it.

Frankly, it made singing the Spice Girls with her quite fun.

"...okay, okay, I'll admit it," he nods quickly, exhaling in amusement. "I used to watch Spice World about once a month. Though I definitely can't say that I had a lot of love for every one of those girls. Baby Spice still gets on my nerves more than she should
