"I'm seriously impressed," Kurt announced as he approached from the side, having spotted Lisbeth from the moment she stepped into the bar, but only just managing to recognize her for the new look that she sported. The motorcycle boots she wore only got the briefest of exasperated glances, Kurt quickly reminding himself that even baby steps were positive, and even then, it was pretty clear that Lisbeth had already worked well out of her general range of comfort.

Knowing that Puck had quite a thing for the young woman, Kurt felt obligated to at least put in a good word or two for his friend as well. "You're definitely going to knock Puck off his feet, by the way, whenever he sees you. This is a seriously great look."

That she thought of Kurt as a cheerful elfin creature that would be well suited to a magical treehouse was nothing but a compliment. That she'd dressed nicely for his event was an even higher compliment, and possibly related to Noah Puckerman.

She wondered what he would think of Irene Nesser. Lisbeth could make herself conventionally attractive in nearly half an hour flat, and it was much easier when she was being Irene, or any other persona. She was reminded again that none of them knew anything about her life before the island, and she planned to keep it that way.

"Happy birthday," she said. "I don't think I've ever been to a party like this."

"Neither have I, to be honest," Kurt grinned, beaming from cheek to cheek, glad both for the opportunity to open someone up to the level of finery that Kurt had always envisioned in his mind as the ideal, and also for the compliment that he felt was inherent in the statement. Even if, perhaps, the tone and setting weren't at all in Lisbeth's taste, there was always something to be said for being the first, the pioneer, the person who led others into new experiences. "I never had the means or the... invitee list, to be frank. I guess there's just something about this island that brings together the most unexpected of personalities."

Quickly waving Ishiah over, Kurt reached for a new glass of wine, before gesturing and glancing over at Lisbeth. "Merlot? Zinfandel? Or are you of a beer kind of person?"

"Beer is more in my comfort zone," Lisbeth said, watching his gestures with a mind that would not forget them. She studied him because there was a quality in him that suggested he wasn't always comfortable in his skin, but persevered. It was admirable.

"You didn't have many friends at home?" She looked over to where Puck was, frowning slightly, as if he might be subjected to questioning about the subject.

Lisbeth had the tendency to be more blunt than almost anyone Kurt had ever met before. It took some getting used to, and had in fact been incredibly grating at the start, before Kurt realized that none of the shortcomings she pointed out, or confusions she laid out in front of her partner, were intended maliciously. She never meant to deliberately unsettle anyone at all. If anything, there was something about her behavior that seemed to play the role of the observer, digging deep into every person's psyche, every interaction, as though finding those patterns might have helped her determine the person's next step, like a game of chess ( ... )
