The rule of all parties seemed to be that there was always one or two people who came in spite of feeling absolutely miserable. Or, in fact, that one or two people came expressly because they weren't having great days, either looking to find others to wallow with them, or looking to find a way to have the day pick up. While Kurt couldn't say which group Kate fell into, he recognized the look of discontent, and intent on being a good host, decided to swing by and see if there was anything he could do to make it better.

"I have to say," he greeted first, a glass of wine resting in his fingers, more for show than consumption, "that your shoes are absolutely amazing. Louboutin always manages a beautiful arch."

"And I never would've been able to afford shit like this in Kansas," Kate agreed, looking down at her shoes. The fact that the box gave out stuff like this -- or, when the box failed her, there was the boutique, where she'd brought a few dresses in sizes that had been too big or too small, meaning she had some credits to spare -- was incredible.

"Your jacket is amazing. No one dressed like this back home." Maybe that was what Overland Park was missing. Maybe there should have been a few more black tie events at the Gregson household.

"You'd be surprised what you can do on a relatively small budget," Kurt countered lightly, though he offered a sympathetic tilt of his head, knowing full well that more rural regions were simply far less likely to keep a decent stock of the latest couture lines and fashions. "Growing up, I used to totally lament living in Lima, Ohio, seemingly without access to anything. But with places like Amazon that now ship secondhand goods from private sellers across the world? You'd be shocked at what you can find. Though... I guess that's less applicable, here."

Grinning, he shook his head to free himself of the thought. "Sorry, got carried away," he apologized, his voice slightly tight, both excited and on edge. "I'm loving this party, but I guess I'm also a bit in nervous host mode, just worrying about the first thing that breaks and whether or not people here are having a good time. So, you know. Now's your chance to air any grievances."

Kate was pretty sure both her parents would have killed her if she'd spent her hard earned money on Amazon when she was supposed to be saving for college or whatever. But she sort of thought if she'd ever gone forward with that whole internet Princess thing, she could have had some pretty sweet shoes on her wish list sent to her. After all, she'd been determined to get a Vespa.

"No, it's good," she assured Kurt, breaking into a grin. "I mean, classy clothes, good food and drinks and a kick ass game all amount to a pretty great party." She was especially looking forward to pelting people with water balloons.

"I was afraid that more people would take offense to the condom balloons," Kurt admitted with a matching grin, wrinkling his nose for just a second in amusement. "It isn't exactly the classiest choice around, but, well, what's a party without balloons, and what are condoms if not made of latex? They even come in... a multitude of colors, apparently. I'm told that some of them even glow in the dark, though I haven't really tested that theory."

His eyes widened a touch at the thought, lips pressing into a lightly embarrassed line. The balloons had been Santana's idea, naturally, and he wasn't sure what exactly had compelled him to go along with it, though the game was one that he certainly loved to no end.

"If anyone's offended by condom balloons, they need to get over themselves," Kate said honestly. It was sort of silly, but she knew Kurt was at least partly right. There had to be someone on the island who'd take offense to it, someone like Alice, who'd clutch her pearls and say something ridiculous like, 'My word!' before trying to put a stop to it.

"Now I want to see them glowing in the dark," she added as she laughed. "A glow in the dark condom water balloon is even better than a regular one."

"I had... a little trouble with the idea, at first," Kurt admitted with a slight cringe. "Not of the offended sort, I mean, they're just personal items, I'm not sure that I have the right to be- anyway, I just thought maybe it was a bit much, knowing where they normally go, but then I realized that it really doesn't make a difference what something is manufactured with the purpose of doing. It just depends on what you do with it, and I can't really find any good arguments against the use of island resources to support a water balloon fight."

His lips quirked in amusement, finding that he liked the girl's sense of humor, even if it was a bit more direct than his own. "Maybe later, if Assassins goes on for a while, we can have ten minutes of Assassins in the dark."

"Shit, sorry," Kate answered, pressing her lips together briefly. Of course she'd put her foot in her mouth like that, but at least Kurt didn't seem totally offended by her tendency to just say whatever came into her head.

"I think if we play in the dark, everyone's gonna end up soaked," she added, not that she minded. The dress might get wet, but she'd sacrifice it if she had to. "We won't be able to see our targets." And so, everyone would become a target, as far as Kate was concerned. "That would actually be pretty awesome."

"Oh, don't worry, I didn't take offense," Kurt shakes his head with a light grin. He's been made well-aware, especially in recent weeks, of just how conversative he can be regarding certain topics, especially compared to other teens his age, but there don't seem to be any arguments which are compelling enough for him to turn away from how he feels. Certainly, he doesn't want to force himself to bend if he isn't ready- and this holds especially true after he's seen a couple of Glee club do the exact opposite, trying to conform to the usual societal standards.

Letting his fingers continue hovering by his chin, Kurt grinned. "I think that's the idea, though. Lights off, everyone's basically out and chaos ensues. Which, granted, would probably make me panic in the moment, but on a hypothetical level, totally fun to imagine."

"Totally fun," Kate agreed, although she was honestly excited about the game either way. Shitty things aside, it was something like that she needed right now. It was probably the sort of thing Britta might have enjoyed, but she didn't want to think about that much. That would just bring her down again.

"I never played anything like that back home," she admitted. "Is that something you did a lot of?" It probably wouldn't have gone over too well at any of the parties she'd gone to before the island, if only because people were lazy.

"Honestly?" And Kurt looked at Kate with a soft eye, pressing his lips together and preparing to throw his guise of confidence into the wind, because there didn't seem to be a point in holding up such appearances, not then. Not when Kate seemed to be nothing but open and accepting, for someone who had only met him so recently. He shook his head. "No. Parties, games, I... no. Suffice it to say that until I found my school's glee club, the majority of people in the school just didn't care to go out of their way to know the gay guy. Didn't matter if I was in the closet, out of it. Lima, Ohio is rather conservative."

With a soft breath, he glanced at the party again, disbelieving.

"So this is rather a first hurrah, if you will. I'm surprised it's gone over so well."
