Hurrying along the dark corridor Albus kept looking back over his shoulder as they made their way towards the potions store room. His older brother was just in front of him striding confidently along the deserted corridor. It was a few hours past curfew, early enough that the prefects were still patrolling in their sections close by. He couldn’t help thinking that each corner they turned would lead them right into the path of a professor or prefect.

“There’s no point looking over your shoulder like that, Al; there’s no one there.”

Tapping the thick parchment he was holding gently on Al’s head James grinned spreading it out in front of him so he could see. It was a very old, slightly crinkled map that showed the whole school on various pieces that folded out. “No other footprints see? Just little you and little me, and the map never lies; Dad said so right?”

Al nodded watching the footsteps labelled Flitwick walking underneath them a few floors below.

“What if it doesn’t show ghosts? They don’t have feet to make footsteps do they?”

Laughing, James stopped by the large oak door and carefully folded the map and put it back into his pocket.

“Stop worrying so much, people will start to wonder if you really are a Potter.” Tapping his wand on the lock he hurried inside as the door creaked open, dragging Albus with him. The store cupboard was small and packed from floor to ceiling with bottles, glass jars and bundles of herbs. Everything was neatly labelled and lined up perfectly.

“Right where’s Freddie’s list…” Digging in his pockets, James climbed up the ladder looking along the rows of vials and bottles for the ingredients needed, checking each one off against the list he was holding. Pulling the door closed, Al leant back against it, folding his arms over his chest, watching his brother quietly. “What are you going to sample, Al?”

“Me? I’m only here as look-out.”

“I told you already I don’t need a look out; I’ve got Dad’s map. You jumped at the chance to come earlier when Freddie mentioned it so you must be after something. What about Scorpius? Does he want polyjuice to look even more like his father?”

“He looks nothing like his father! He’s a lot more…” Al stopped suddenly, his eyes widening as if shocked at what he’d nearly said.

“A lot what?” Hopping off the last step of the ladder James grinned, tucking the bottles he’d selected into his robe pockets. “You think he’s a lot cuter right? Here.” Handing a small clear bottle to Al he winked, making sure the ladder was back in the same position he’d found it, just like Freddie had said he had to do to cover his tracks. “You’ll find that useful. Maybe you can get over your nerves and ask him out when you know how he feels about you.”

“What is it?” Holding up the bottle, Al shook the clear liquid inside, watching it swirl around. It looked like water only a little thicker.

“Veritaserum. Truth potion. Give him a couple of drops and he’ll tell you every dirty little thought he’s ever had about you if you asked.”

“He doesn’t think of me like that.”

“You want to bet on that? I’ve heard some interesting whispers about him you know.”

Unfolding the map again, James studied it tracing his finger over the route they’d need to take back to their common rooms. “Roxie caught him kissing that Ravenclaw beater you know, Luke isn’t it? It was only last week too. I‘ve heard he looks at you funny sometimes, Roxie says he stares at your butt when you play Quidditch.”

Looking down at his shoes, Al shrugged a little and scuffed his toe against the stone floor. He knew he could never hide his feelings from his brother. He was the one person apart from his Dad who could read Al like a book. James knew he liked Scorpius as more than just a friend. They’d known each other since half way through their first year and had always stuck close to each other. Al just wasn’t sure if Scorpius thought of him as any more than just a friend.

“Luke looks like a troll compared to you, Al, so give him that and then work from there ok? Looks like Flitwick is heading this way next so we’d better make a dash for it.”

Pulling open the door, James checked the map once more before grabbing Al’s arm and dragging him down the corridors till they reached the staircase and separated to head back to their dorms.

Climbing up the spiral staircase that led to the Ravenclaw common room, Al looked down at the small bottle in his hand, biting his lip thinking about what James had said. It would make things a lot simpler. Scorpius was shy about feelings and didn’t open up easily even to his close friends. If Veritaserum did work well it would help but Al couldn’t help feeling like it was a betrayal of his friend’s trust.

Reaching the door, he sighed and looked up at the large golden eagle on the door knocker. Answering the riddle that was used as a password easily, he walked inside; heading straight to the boys dorms where he knew Scorpius would be studying.
Seeing him sitting cross legged on his bed, he smiled, jogging over and jumping up to sit next to him.

“Al!” Grabbing his parchments and quills, Scorpius moved them out of the way, spelling away the spilt ink that had spread across the blanket. “We don’t throw ourselves around like that here.” Even though he tried to sound annoyed he was smiling.

“You don’t? It’s time someone showed you how to do it then.”

“I’ll leave that sort of behaviour down in the dungeon with you snakes thank you.”

Laughing, Al flopped back onto the bed, looking up at the navy curtains stretched over head. He knew Scorpius was only being playful. The house rivalry had grown less serious in the years following the war.

“I was out with James just now. He was on a mission for Freddie and he…he gave me something.”

Leaning over the end of the bed, Scorpius neatly packed away his books into his trunk before lying down beside, Al looking over at him curiously.

“What did he give you?”

Pulling the bottle from his pocket, Al held it up above them so Scorpius could see it.

Taking the small bottle, Scorpius held it up to the light, looking at the liquid inside. It sloshed against the glass. Looking thicker than plain water.

“This is Veritaserum. It looks very well made too, almost like it’s a professor’s work.”

Glancing sideways at Al, Scorpius raised an eyebrow. “Did your brother nick this?”

Blushing, Al looked away nodding. James’ reputation was well known around the school and his detention record was almost legendary.

Sitting up, Scorpius swilled it around for a moment before tugged out the small cork and tipped it up, letting three drops fall onto his tongue.

“Your turn.”

Staring at him in shock, Al took the bottle and dropped three onto his own tongue, leaning back against the headboard of the bed and waited for it to take effect. A few minutes passed in silence as they each waited, not knowing what would happen.

“How do we know when it’s working?”

“Ask me what I think about your eyes.”

Frowning, Al turned his head to face his friend.

“My eyes? What do you think about my eyes?”

“They remind me of the Quidditch pitch. That lush green of well cared for grass. Give it a few more minutes.” Watching him Al waited to see if he would feel any different.

“How about now?”

“They match your house colours and when you wear your scarf in winter it really makes the colour pop. It looks so sexy then.” Gasping softly, Scorpius looked away shyly putting a hand over his mouth. “And now we know it’s working.”

“You think all that about my eyes? I didn’t think you even looked at me like that.”

“It’s hard not to look at you, Al, you‘re so cute.” Cursing under his breath, Scorpius glanced back at him over his shoulder. “This stuff is strong! Where did you get it?”

“James and I paid a little visit to old Sluggy’s store-room.”

“You’ll get into loads of trouble if you get caught.”

“No one knows we were there and we’re Potters no one will think it was us if they do notice it‘s gone.”

Turning back to face him, Scorpius sighed dropping his hands back to his lap.

“What do you think about me?”

It was Al’s turn to blush. He could almost feel the words fluttering in the back of his throat, eager to burst out.

“I think you’re gorgeous! I have for ages now and I’ve always wanted to tell you but I was scared.”

Reaching out, Scorpius held Al’s hand, twining their fingers together.

“When I saw you on the platform back in our first year I thought you were the cutest boy there. I had hoped we’d be in the same house but we still became friends.”

Hiding his face against his shoulder, Al listened to him, feeling his cheeks grow redder and redder.

“James is going to brag for days when he finds out he was right. He said you liked me.”

Lifting his head, Al sighed happily, looking over at Scorpius. “It will be worth it though, knowing now how you feel about me.”

Nodding Scorpius leaned forward and kissed him softly on the lips.
