(OOC: First section taken from A Likely Impossibility. And then it had to be continued. So... Set post-Voyage of the Damned, but pre-S4.)

Nothing is ever impossible. Rose learned that well enough travelling with the Doctor. Never mind the number of times he said something was impossible - the fact that these seemingly impossible things were always ( Read more... )

It's him. It's him again, after so long. It's funny, really - she stopped paying attention to how old she was after her 32nd birthday, still looking eightee-- nineteen (her little girl looks older than her now, and she's not even nineteen), but she knows exactly how long it's been since she's seen him.

Just seven months shy of thirty years.

"Hello, Doctor," she says, her voice betraying more emotion than she'd like, unconsciously echoing the tone she knew the Doctor had when he told her about seeing Sarah Jane after she found the TARDIS. So long ago, that was - Sarah Jane could be dead now, she has no idea.

It doesn't matter. All that matters is here and now, after months of trying to track him down, she's found him.

The Doctor stares at her.

It is Rose. It is, down to the very distinct way she tilts her chin up to look at him, the inflections of her voice, the exact height she comes up to on him...

But it can't be, because he doesn't get days like this. Days where everything goes right, where he really gets everything he wants and there's no lingering doubt, no one sacrifice that's just a bit too much... He used to get days like that.

He's not that sort of a man anymore.

"How did you... What... Rose?"

"You're a hard one to find, you know," she says, just trundling right along, determined to keep it together. She's a grown woman, she doesn't have to get all... teenaged girl on him.

Except that she'll sort of always be 19 around the Doctor.

"I've been looking for you... about eight months now." Without Jack. Without Mickey. Without Jake or Rhys or Ianto or... oh, even SJ. No one that she'd normally rely on. All on her own, for the honest-to-goodness first time in her life. "In future, try to be easier to find. That's all I'm saying."

"It's not like I have a post box!" he retorts, a little offended. And then his expression lightens, realization lighting up his face.

Rose, don't mind if you can't breathe now. It's just that the Doctor needs to pounce, and cling, and possibly never let go. Even if it means your face is now buried in his chest and his arms are possibly squeezing the breath out of you.

"Oh, it is you!"
