Apr 11, 2009 14:28

Francine, usually a morning person, woke up... slowly. Probably the punch. Wait, punch? Ohhhh, prom. Like before, it had been just a little too good, and they were dumb, dumb, du---

They?

Oh. Yeah. Oh.

Francine, sitting on the bed wearing... well, not her never-wearable-again dress anymore, at least; she'd found a sweater and some jeans, STARED. "I who WHAT?"

And was divebombed by a small child. "I had cake for breakfast!"

".......I can see that!" Francine made a purely instinctive attempt to wipe some of it off his face. "It, um. Looks like it was good."

Artie held still and beamed. At least Mommy was acting like Mommy here. "I found it inna fridge."

"That's where cake lives," Francine agreed, still staring at him.

"Are you sure you're supposed to go in there by yourself?" slipped out as if it was genetically encoded.

"Not without asking you," Artie said, like this was something he should know but always did."

This. Was. So. Weird. Like, weirder than the stripper weekend weird.

"Somehow I have the feeling you forgot to this time," Francine said. "What's your. Um." Crap, if this boy thought she was his mother, she didn't want to traumatize him by asking that. "Maybe you're having memory problems. Can you tell me your name?"

"He beamed at her, trying to climb up onto the bed. "I'm Artie, mommy. Like Unca!"

Oh, Lord. Francine reached down to pick him up, and once again? Disturbed by how natural that felt. "Arthur's your uncle?"

Artie proceeded to hug her, relaxing for only a moment before all that sugar hit again. "Uh-huh! An' we all live inna castle and I'mma play with a sword!"

She stared down at the not-entirely-cake-free face. And the ears.

The EARS.

"Swords are sharp," she said slowly. "Is this like the refrigerator? 'Cause you really shouldn't forget to ask first about swords."

"Unca promised to show me!" He insisted.

Francine did know that Arthur could tie his own shoes, really. More importantly, she knew he was kind of fanatical about his swords and armor and stuff. "Okay, I guess that's different. You have to listen to him, though. They're not a toy."

No. Seriously. She was giving weapon safety lectures to a child who claimed he was hers and Merlin's. WHAT. Just WHAT.

Artie tried for another tackleglomp. "I can be a page? Can I?"
