Sadly the general stupidity of the American public seems to be so true about so many things, the whole health care "debate" among them. How can there even be a debate on needing health care reform when so many people's experiences with it in this country are negative?

why so hysterical, America? and I dont mean that in the 'funny, ha-ha' way. *headdesk*

I think it's kind of funny (not ha ha either) that people consider TDS to just be a comedy show but everything that happens on FOX to be "news" rather than "ratings fodder" and "poke the bear" material.

I just read an NPR post where a medical billing assistant discussed how awful the financing part of medicine is. She mentioned that insurance companies actually take back payments they have already made to doctors, citing some sort of retroactive reason, sometimes months later. The patient, of course, remains liable. I can not imagine how that can be legal, and yet people are happy with their insurance coverage? Who are they?

I dunno, man. I'm a firm believer that people don't necessarily vote their interests...which sounds horrible, but it's true. it all comes down to education...and not even general education level, but education in politics and policy-making, specifically. my dad has a PhD in engineering but is *incredibly* naive when it comes to this arena and susceptible to believing talking points if they're repeated often enough. the only reason he got on board with health care reform is the three-year long battle he had with his own insurance company (he was almost paralyzed by a herniated disk and United called the surgery 'elective' and tried to refuse proper coverage ( ... )

I grew up Catholic in the 50's, so there was NO talk about sex at all. I learned everything the hard way and vowed not to let what happened to me happen to my own children.

Lots of people here are completely embarrassed by talking to their kids/parents about sex or masturbating, too, but's that all it is. We're more shocked by that kind of squeamish sex-negativity, or hearing things like, some American teenagers don't know unprotected sex is likely to get you pregnant. It's the 21st C, guys, you need to work on that!

Without being repressed, my parents were still not the sex-talk type, but that's what we have sex-ed in Biology class for. I think it's really important to have decent sex-ed for everyone. If I ever have kids, I'll talk to them a bit, but I'll have my best friend do the serious sex talk with them. She'll be good at that. :)

I think its so wonderful when parents can have open and honest discussions about sex with their kids

Have you ever watched the Midwest Teen Sex Show? It's an excellent resource and they encourage discussions between parents and teens about these topics.

I was lucky, even though we were very Christian my mom was still very open to talking about sexual stuff. I remember sitting with a couple of my brothers at one point when I was a teenager and just discussing stuff about our bodies. She also mentioned that when my brothers' friend would come over there would occasionally be group discussions about stuff their parents wouldn't talk to them about. I hope someday that's true for me and my son.
