(btw, my icon is a clouded leopard, not a tiger...case you can't tell *g*)ok, this footage is AMAZING. it's all over youtube out of context, but I have an article below the cut from the Wildlife Trust of India that tells what happened. basically, they were trying to dart a "nuisance" female tiger that was killing livestock in local villages,

well, I wouldn't say it's an irrational fear, per se. working on close quarters with big cats, it's a real danger, especially if you are not familiar with their body language and the signals they send before they attack.
this is precisely why I don't support the kind of situations you described, actually. I think letting members of the general public come into personal contact with big cats is a recipe for disaster.
most zoos now have policies for handling large cats and other "dangerous" animals that involve the keepers never being in the same space as an untranquilized cat.
what I *do* think is irrational is the fear that predators need to be killed in the wild before they injure or kill us...the assumption being that we can't share the same space at all. I think there are precautions you can take that make it far less likely you'll ever be in danger.

I sort of hate that this is all over youtube now, because out-of-context, it just adds to the kind of weird hostile hysteria we feel towards big cats, bears, sharks, crocs, etc. if you look up any of these animals on amazon.com, the majority of what comes up is "so-and-so attacks!" I just wish people would use some damned common sense. then at the other extreme, humans think we are at the top of the food chain, so to speak, and are invincible... *steps off soap box*Well bears are of course godless killing machines ;) Actually, I tend to think the hysteria is better than the alternative. Here in Colorado they sometimes have to put down bears because stupid people feed the bears, the bears stop being afraid of people, and start heading deeper and deeper into town and become a danger ( ... )

oh, stephen. *hearts*
very true about people who have teddy-bear illusions. I wish a happy medium were more common, but we're generally so urban as a society now that we have very distorted views of wildlife.
very cool about the cougar! and yeah, attacks are actually very rare. generally, they're the shyest of north american big predators.

And hehehe that second one is damned funny. That presenter guy had like NO control over that big *whispers*fat kitty. If she'd decided to maul that guy well then he'd be missing a face hehehe.

oh yes. that second tiger is FAT. especially when you contrast it to the wild kitty.

they had a mountain lion attack out here I think last year? and it was a jogger that was almost killed running on a trail that was CLEARLY marked all over the place, danger, mountain lion area, and they SHOT the lion!!! they should have shot the stupid jogger that thought, oh hey....i'm a human...i'll be fine they wouldn't dare. Asshole.
I swear, the only worse than an ignorant human is a self righteous one.
grrrrrrr.........and yeah........i liked the second one to..who the FUCK keeps a wild animal on a leash? HELLOOOOOOOOOOO.....it's called respect your elders you fucks.
*sighs* can you tell i like animals better than humans?

*pats* well, I think that guy was actually not a bad guy. the fact that they were darting her leads me to believe they were going to *move* her, not kill her...and if she'd stayed near those villages, someone else would have shot her. so they were good guys, likely.
*smooch*
