The underside of the guard has a fine angle; it simply could use more defined "bumps" at the edges. I'm more concerned about your liberties with the marble-like tip of the hilt.
I'm debating switching to the off-center oblong design (without the little nub on he bottom) when/if I fix the angle of the hilt. The advantages would be that it would look more interesting and might look better with the, er, wire part of the guard attached to it (it looks a touch awkward to me right now). The disadvantage it that it has to be lined up convincingly, too. I have leeway with historical accuracy, though I suppose it would be an advantage.
