I got the New Orleans Times at the hotel this morning, and the photograph of Saddam was classy... a picture of him alone in the defendants box at the court room in Iraq. They used words like gallows instead of hanged and it took a good paragraph or so of fairly eloquent writing before they laid it out, that he had been executed ( Read more... )

No, it really was bizarre and everyone i've talked to has expressed the same feelings of disgust over the media's gross fascination with his execution. We were flipping through channels last night and all of the major news stations were running whatever they could about saddam, the trial and his impending execution. CNN did a short thing where they had an anatomical dummy with a noose around it's neck and they were explaining to the audience what would happen to Saddam's body when he was hung. It was disturbing how gleefully they were reporting the whole event. Even more bizarre was when i went out with friends several hours later and we were in a bar at around midnight, waiting for drinks at the bar. They were playing fox news on a tv overhead and all they were talking about was his execution and how they were awaiting video and images of his execution. It was surreal to be watching it in a college type bar no less.

I'm not saying he didn't deserve to be executed but for christ's sake, why are we so enamoured by it?

Sadly, my well of cynicism is deep enough not to overflow about this. I actually expected worse, though I suppose his death will be exploited by the Bush administration in due course.

What are you doing in New Orleans?
