Pelosi's speech before the vote...

Pelosi has no control over the House. 95 of her fellow party members bailed on her. This is a slap in the face for her. She couldn't get a final dozen or so Democrats to vote 'Aye'.

Remember that she is the Speaker of the House. She gets to decide committee memberships and which bills go to which committee to be considered. To oppose the ( Read more... )

Maybe she's just really clever and wanted it to fail while still openly supporting it?

Can you imagine the field day the Republicans would have in the media if they could legitimately point to the Democrats as deliberately obstructing this bailout? McCain is trying to blame the Democrats anyway...

When the other side is calling the bill a "crap sandwich", you don't then try to blame them for causing the problem. (Which is what Pelosi was saying when she blamed Bush for destroying the Clinton surplus in his first two years. Those two years were when the Republicans controlled the House.)

It's not that she's a failure as a speaker, it's that all the politicians are scared shitless. Completely empty colons. I don't think anyone short of Mussolini with a gatling gun could have kept all party members in line in the face of a depression and an election.

Maybe I'm a bastard but I am happy the bill failed. i hope all the rest do too. I don't want to give more of my money to financial institutions to reward bad investments on their part. Not unless someone plans on rewarding my bast investments.
