So. Imagine you're a police detective. A woman comes to you claiming to be psychic. She tells you where to find a box with the remains of a missing person you've been investigating. You look and find same.

Do you
a) believe she is psychic
b) suspect she is in some way connected to the crime?

Check both angles of course. What kind of gathering are you at?

Oh, I'm reading trash again. I suppose I shouldn't grumble given that I have deliberately chosen the "detective/bountyhunter who is in some way supernatural" subgenre. JR Rainn is the author and a retired PI.

You could try some Laura Anne Gillman too. One of her series is down that vein.

B, because there's no such thing as a psychic.

This. Although actual police detectives have often shown themselves alarmingly willing to give credence to such people.

Guess it depends a bit on context - in real life, definitely (b). In an RPG / freeform, (a) or (b) about equally likely.

Always assume B unless overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

This is why if you want to prove your psychic abilities to the police, you have to have THEM choose the crime to find out about.
I do not know why I had already worked this out and filed it away in my brain from years ago.
