Star Trek - Symmetries and Echoes in the Movie

May 18, 2009 23:08

I have now watched the movie four times and have plans to watch it for a fifth and sixth time. There are times in once life where one has to be the tiniest bit fannish.

What I have noticed during my repeated watching is that the movie is very symmetrical: Many themes are repeated at least once and scenes echo one another.

Here are some examples:

Very interesting and thoughtful observations. I've seen it twice and saw more the second time. It's wonderful how you can notice something 'new' every time. I also noticed another "echo"--when Nero gazes upward and yells, "Spock! Spock!" Reminded me of that "Wrath of Khan" scene when Kirk looks up and yells, "Khan! Khan!"

A very satisfying film all the way 'round.

Yes! It's entirely possible that this is not a coincidence.

Have also noticed that there are echoes during the mind-meld scene. And at the end of the mindmeld, you can hear Kirk "mind-talking" as well. There's his "No!" during the destruction of the Kelvin. I think that we also hear a whispered "What's next?" from him and then Spock Primes tells him how he was captured. Very neat!

Good thing I'm watching the movie again tomorrow. :-) Ah, fannish obsession...

Those are all very interesting parallels, but I have to say I thought the hanging of a cliff bit was Somewhat Overdone. Not just in movies in general--I mean, come on, will it never get old?--but when you have to hit me over the head that many times, either you think I'm stupid, or you're not making your point adequately. And further repetition probably won't help. ("You" being "filmmakers," not you-you.)

Yes, the cliff-hanging is a favorite amongst movie-makers.

At least, we got no elevator-action scenes. You know the "I need to jump into the elevator or I'll be killed by my pursuers!"-scenes. Instead they gave us an "Must get into the elevator to comfort my boyfriend"-scene. :-)
