I believe you'll find the difference is that hedgehogs are placental mammals and echidnas are monotremes, or egg-laying mammals). The echidna's natural habitat is limited to Australia and New Guinea, while for the hedgehog it is more widely spread, found in pockets across Africa, Europe and Asia. The echidna mainly feds on termites, while the hedgehog munches on a variety of moth larvae and small amounts of vegetables.
