The UK's best known expert in transsexualism is being investigated by the General Medical Council after claims he repeatedly put his patients' health at risk, the Guardian has learned
( Read more... )
I heard that all that happened was that he got a slap on the wrist from the GMC and so his treatment of existing patients will not change (the hearing was last Tuesday I think). I don't personally have solid proof of this but the lady who left a comment on somebodies website had apparantly been in contact with his practice, and she seems quite trustworthy. I'm not sure how this is all going to affect any of his future patients but, if what i've heard is correct, you should have no problems so there's no need to panic.
Also, after travelling the internet grapevine, I came under the impression that the Guardian plan to run a series of articles on TS treatment. The messageboard I saw the journalist inquire on naturally jumped to RR's defense, so I guess keep your eyes peeled for how the paper handles this.
Just to clarify, her exact words were; 'Russell Reid was NOT struck off. He was given a slap on the wrist, but it's very doubtful that that will affect the treatment of existing patients.'
How recent was that? And anyway ... this statement from the Guardian news article still worries me ...
Regardless of the hearing's outcome, Dr Reid will then appear before the preliminary practice committee on January 26-27. This will decide whether there should be a full inquiry by the professional conduct committee, which has the power to strike a doctor off the medical register. I guess we still need to wait and see what happens there ...
She said that on Wednesday. And yes, that statement is still worrying. Still, there appears to be a few hoops to jump through yet and considering the apparant GMC ruling, and all the letters of support that I've heard people are writing (i'd write one myself but i havn't actually seen rr, nor have i been through chx yet...., so i can't make a personally informed statement), the investigation could be thrown out next week. Yeah, lets wait and see what happens.
Intresting that all this has started happening while the GerBill's going through isn't it?

Hope that helps.
