Bigotry Still Has An Outlet In Medical Journals

Oct 05, 2006 21:25

Quite frankly I am disgusted that a medical journal would allow a bigot to mouth off in their pages but it seems the Irish Medical Times is fine with publishing hate. The article I'm referring to is Sex change will take more than surgery and hormones by the infamous social leper Dr Joyce Galbraith ( Read more... )

Yes, he's a twat. There are a lot of them about.

No, him disagreeing with you doesn't make it ok to muffle his opinions.

"just think where we'd be if we didn't make it clear that public displays of this kind are unacceptable."

Yes.. we'd be in a Totalitarian state.

Ah, the "freedom of speech" crowd are out in force today! Well done for waiting a few hours before deciding to jump in.

If it's okay for anyone to spout bigotry and hate then it must be equally acceptable for any kind of material to be published. After all, freedom of speech must work for everyone or it works for noone.

In this case, you'd be defending Mein Kampf being freely available in all public libraries, wouldn't you? How about Varieties of Man/Boy Love?

What Dr Galbraith wrote here is not acceptable in a medical journal under any circumstances. Not only is it not science but it espouses hatred. Its publication is indefensible.

Also, since you've clearly not read the article properly, I'll point out that Dr Galbraith is a woman.

I notice you didn't try to pass comment on whether you'd be okay with Varieties of Man/Boy Love being freely available. Am I therefore to assume you would be in favour of this particular book being banned?

Oh my, what utter crap! What's that all about? It doesn't seem to be much substance to write a magazine article about! "I don't think some people pass very well post-op". So what?! Did anyone ask for your opinion?!

And excuse me, but when did having a sex change become fashionable? I must have been asleep when that phase of fashion passed us by!

Who do you recommend i email to express my disgust at this pathetic drivel?

I think most people are contacting the editor (colin.kerr@imt.ie) since he's ultimately responsible for the content of the magazine.

It seems that, as the publication is weekly, the website doesn't bother keeping old articles. Google Cache should remember it for a while though.

Well what do you know ... it's completely disappeared off the face of the internet! Not a moment too soon either - perhaps our complaints had an effect! I assure you, you didn't miss anything worth reading, but it's sometimes informative to know what people's bizarre opinions of trans people really are ...

For anybody reading this in the future, I was looking for this article and found a copy of it here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/transgendernews/message/16915 . But be warned; as stated in this post, it's extremely transphobic.
