My Own Private NHS

I was looking into something which was mentioned in a reply to an old post of mine, namely the possibility of getting the NHS to fund appointments with the private Transhealth clinic in London.

I just wondered if anyone who had pulled off this feat could give me some pointers in how to cajole my GP into requesting this from the local PCT?

private vs. nhs, nhs treatment, financial issues

I'm in the process. The Very Nice Lady who is making to the recommendation to the PCT that I be given full funding (including going to the private clinic rather than Charing X) suggested it, because she didn't think Charing X and I would get on.

My GP had to be cajoled to refer me at all, but she then referred me to a local NHS psychiatrist who works together with a social worker (the Very Nice Lady) of about 30 years' experience of working with transpeople. They did/are doing the assessment together; now we're waiting on hearing from the PCT, I guess. I had to cancel my last appt cos of work stuff, so I just don't know.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I believe it very much depends on your PCT. Some are quite enlightened, and willing to be quite flexible about referrals. Others, such as mine, seem to be rather more inflexible and will only follow the standard, one size fits all, GIC path, which usually means a referral via a local psych to Charing Cross.

I hope you've got one of the better ones.
