changing your name by statutory declaration is probably the easiest/cheapest. you have to get a solicitor to sign it and they usually charge about £5-£10 for that i think. you'd probably have to pay for a few copies as well but i don't think that costs very much.

there's a stat dec generator as well as general information on changing your name by statutory declaration, here.

hope that helps.

Just follow the instructions here ...

http://ftm.org.uk/node/54

... to produce your own Statutory Declaration, and you should be able to get it notarised by an appropriate person (solicitor, or clerks to magistrates courts) for around £6.

Stat Dec is cheapest, www.ftm.org.uk has a thingy you can fill in to produce the paperwork then you can take it to any solicitor and have it sworn for <£10. Some places are a bit funny about taking Stat Decs though, because they don't look "official". Make sure you take 4 copies or more to get sworn though, as several places will want to see originals. It shouldn't cost any more to get 4 copies done instead of 1.

A deed poll looks pretty and official but costs a lot more. (Over £30 from memory) www.ukdps.co.uk is OK, but they actually take longer than they say to send stuff out.

Statutory Declaration is the way to go, for sure. If you happen to be on friendly terms with a solicitor you could probably get it done for free.
