Is spell check really that hard to find?

I know the web interface to LiveJournal has an optional spell check. I know that the client I've been using has spell check. I realize that spell check is not a panacea, but it's a start. I also know that spelling flames are obnoxious, but if I see "definately" one more time, I'm going to, uh, do nothing. I'm already posting this, so what's the ( Read more... )

Ack! Spell check is not helping! tfofurn March 26 2003, 07:31:32 UTC
When I just posted that, the LJ client's spell checker didn't flag "definately". Argh! These people are using a spell checker with a defective dictionary! Noooooooooooo! At least the web interface's spell checker flags it.

Apache, the software used to serve most web pages, has a module called mod_speling, which spell-checks badly formed URLs.

Regarding prepositions, Churchill responded to a critique of his grammar with "This is the sort of pedantry up with which I will not put."

Duh? Again, the spell checkers fail me. Either it's smart enough to skip words followed by [sic], it doesn't check the subject line, or "speeking" and "speling" are acceptable.

the spellchecker on livejournal gets stuff wrong all the time. I've taken to basically ignoring it.

Um, color me confused, but what is wrong with "definitely"?

Ha! I was incapable of typing it incorrectly before! tfofurn March 26 2003, 12:42:21 UTC
Yes, I was trying to make a point about "definately". I've now, uh, corrected the original post to have the incorrect form. "Definitely" is the correct spelling. Now I realize why the spell checker missed it: I hadn't put the wrong version in! Eep. Nothing like a spelling flame with a spelling mistake! This is some sort of inverse mistake, but you know what I mean.

ack, that's even more painfully meta, and the revisionist nature of being able to go back and edit old posts means that our contextual conversation is going to be completley confusing to archaeologists who come excavating through your journal sometime in the far future.

But by noting the correction in a comment, won't that be clearing up the confusion? Of course, by the time archeologists are reading this journal, "definately" will be the preferred spelling. A Google search for "definately" yields 684,000 hits. "definitely" yields 6,770,000.

And now I've made myself see "definately" that many more times. It's a good thing I decided in the original post to not do anything about it!
