Windows Backup Software Recommendations?

Apr 11, 2007 00:42

I just bought a lovely external hard drive with which to back up my main desk machine at home. Unfortunately, I thoughtlessly selected a model that doesn't come with any backup software. What does anybody else use? I'm hoping for something that will back up the operating system, the applications, and the registry. Suggestions?

Don't know how it would work for home use, but they use connected backup at work and it seems to cover most stuff. I know they use the backup image when upgrading people's laptops to restore settings.

Yes, but what software vendor? Are they doing this without a local client? I would've gone with Retrospect, but they charge $120 for their home edition!

Google says it's by Iron Mountain Digital, and it does have a local client. 1-4 PC home pricing is:
for 250 MB of files $79.95/yr
for 500 MB of files $9.95/month $99.95/yr
Connected Backup/PC safeguards your valuable data from accidental loss or corruption by automatically backing up files and storing them at Iron Mountain’s highly secure data centers. If you are looking to protect 1 to 4 PCs, Iron Mountain has an online backup plan for you.

All this from their website http://backup.ironmountain.com/plans/soho.asp

Ah. Uploading to offsite would be good for the critical stuff, but I have lots of not-so-critical-but-don't-want-to-lose stuff that's about 1,000 times as much data.

XP Pro or XP Home? I'm given to understand I can get the backup off the Home CD, but that would require me to find it. :-)

It's thrown around with most external harddrives. I've used it in an enterprise and personal setting.

It's not great, but it does a decent job.
