I have my Mother's Mac G4 Cube. Since my TV has a VGA input, I figured it would be fun to have a computer connected. The Mac Mini is beautiful, but a bit pricey. The Cube would only cost as much as the OS upgrade. A big part of the reason I could convince my Mother to upgrade to her Mini was the lack of modern software available under OS 9.

Especially with older hardware, Gentoo is the way to go.

It can be a bit tricky to do the initial install, requiring a bit of command-line work.
However, those command-lines are well-explained, and are designed to be inputted verbatim (where applicable).
Maintenance is easy. I actually prefer Gentoo's package management, since it's really just a bunch of scripts that pull down source packages. So much easier for dependency and version checking than static binary packages. ;-)
But then again, I also have a few systems that were done with Linux from Scratch, whereby I compiled everything. By hand. No manual. No scripts. No fun, either. ;-)
