Saturday night, Barbershop Steve called to ask if I wanted to grab ddmerillat and head over to his new pad to do some singing. He had a baritone in mind that was willing to make the drive. The company I work for does speech recognition on the phone, and we have a driving directions module in our free voice portal. If you want to try it dial 1-800-555-TELL, and say "driving directions". It's just a voice interface, so doesn't show pictures of the terrain, and it doesn't use GPS, so you have to tell it when you've made the turn and are ready for the next direction, and you have to be able to stay connected on the phone for the drive. But, it's free...

I would imagine the key disadvantage of the GPS-less approach is trying to get directions when you don't understand where you're starting from.
